Would you get hypnotized? Have you ever (obviously in a kosher environment and all that…)?
Before anyone says how about you – I would never. It is so not my personality. I’ve been to many hypnotist shows (frum and secular) and personally, I think they’re really healthy, they have you laughing for like an hour straight but like stomach hurting laughing.
(This isn’t the main point, but if someone were to get hypnotized would they be responsible if they did something that wasn’t according to halacha [this is totally hypothetical] because once the person is hypnotized they have no control over their actions)

Do some more research about Hypnotism, theres a lot of confusion and misconceptions about it.
During hypnosis the subject is in control at all times, they are fully conscious and recall everything that happened during hypnosis. They will not and can not do anything they dont agree to do. It is just a state of relaxation where the mind is more open to suggestion.
A hypnotist cant FORCE anyone to do ANYTHING they dont want to do. So if someone does something against Halacha under hypnosis they would be responsible.

I never really did research into emdr but that is the impression that I got. It helps the person remember incidences and with whom etc. I know of a couple of frum therapists who do this as part of their practice but it could be that since it’s for a health reason then it is allowed halachically but I would tell e/o to ask their own sheila of course.
July 8, 2011 1:45 am at 1:45 am #783893yankdownunderMemberSister Bear I don’t have an answer for your question, I thought, it might be of interest to read from other Posters in the CR., that use Hypnosis in their Profession more about Hypnosis and what to look for as far as finding a Hypnotist. Maybe a name and Phone Number of an experienced and Trustworthy Hypnotist in New York City Area.
July 8, 2011 1:49 am at 1:49 am #783894Sister BearMemberI beg to differ WIY (welcome back btw). I’m sure you know a lot more about it than I do but I have spoken to a few people who have been hypnotized and they said that they remember what happened but had no control over what they were doing. One person told me that she remembers thinking, I am not going to do it (whatever the hypnotist told her to do) and sure enough she had no physical choice but to do it. Another person said the same thing, that she remembers everything the hypnotist told her to do and she did it.
Although it is true to some extent, that they don’t do everything but I think that is due to what the hypnotist says. At the frum show the hypnotist said that you wont do anything that will embarrass you, like you just won’t do it if you know that it will embarrass you. And at a secular show the hypnotist was like the audience isn’t clothed and a religious woman (the point is not whether she could go up or not) did not see it.
At the secular shows that I went to the people didn’t even remember doing what we told them they did. And the hypnotist got the people to do stuff that they never knew how to do (like break dance).
I guess it depends on how deep into the hypnotic stage you are.

Thank you for the welcome back!
I have spoken to a few professional hypnotists who have been in the business for many years. Additionally I have been hypnotized a few times and did extensive googling on the subject. Feel free to disagree, but doing thorough research will turn up exactly what I have said.

July 8, 2011 1:25 pm at 1:25 pm #783897HaLeiViParticipantWIY, would you say that the person is in more control than a Shikkur?
July 8, 2011 3:02 pm at 3:02 pm #783898yungerman1ParticipantI have watched Steve Bayner several times the last one being last week. I once saw a frum woman on stage start cuddling the man next to her when the hypnotist made them think it was freezing outside and when he said to get romantic.
Now this woman was dressed tznius, although she wouldnt be classified as a BJJ graduate.
My understanding is that a hypnotist cant get you to do anything that is against your morals. Not sure what happened in this case. Her eyes were closed the whole time and i she didnt even know who was next to her. (In her mind it may have been her husband) But when the hypnotist said to remove some clothes because it is so hot outside only one male removed his shirt.

Yes you are 100% in control, your body and mind are very relaxed and at peace and you are open to suggestion, however you are THERE the whole time, I remember the experience exactly and theres no way I would have accepted anything that didnt agree with my beliefs. You are in a higher state of consciousness which allows you to change certain negative emotions and feelings about certain things from your past or certain things you do. For example they can get you to quit smoking….but it only works if you accept what the hypnotist says and want to sincerely quit smoking. If you mentally resist what the hypnotist is saying to you it will be a waste of both his/her and your time.
