Hypocrisy

Hypocrisy manifests as the public performance of integrity while privately engaging in corrupt practices. When leaders or institutions publicly uphold high moral standards but privately exploit those standards for personal gain, it breeds public cynicism and weakens social trust. This double standard creates an environment where corruption is not only tolerated but expected, as the gap between professed values and real-world actions becomes the norm.

Power disparities exacerbate this dynamic by allowing those in authority to enforce rules on others while exempting themselves. Research indicates that as power becomes more concentrated and asymmetric, the temptation for selfish punishment and corruption increases, because powerful individuals can defect with impunity. This combination of self-deception (delusion) and deceptive practice (hypocrisy) allows corruption to become entrenched, as the powerful justify their actions through delusion and protect their status through hypocritical adherence to superficial norms”
