So I’m sitting in a makom torah yesterday learning and I needed to look something up in the mishna berurah. Lo and behold the part I look up contained the words “Rabbosai Mir Velen Benitishin”. I figure it might make a difference l’halacha so I ask one of the other guys what does “Mir” mean. Well this guy answered my question, but he kinda looked like he thought I fell off mars head first. I thought it was kinda funny.

I may be wrong, but I think “mir” means “me”, not “I”.

Sometimes people find it surprising when a Jew doesn’t know Yiddish. That’s probably the look you saw.

cv, you are wrong in this case, but are right in others.

mir means ‘me’, and means ‘we’. in this case it means “rabbosai we will bentch”.

    ich – I

    mir – me

    unz – us

    mir – we

You misunderstand. HE is Yankel Am Ha’aretz. The surprised look on his face was because you went to ask HIM!

Glad to see that some people still showed respect and did not bring their stack of dictionaries or computers into a makom torah.

Some languages actually have different words for “inclusive we” and “exclusive we.”
