Imagine someone calls you or emails you and says something like, “I was just on YWN, they have something called the CR, I was checking it out and theres someone ________ who sounds so much like you, Is it you?” or something to like that.

    What do you do?

    A. Disappear from the CR

    B. Limit your posting

    C. Continue posting as you did before, even if it means disagreeing with them

    D. Other- be specific

Say yes its me and continue posting like always.

The only reason otherwise is if you are posting bad stuff or something.

There’s nothing wrong with disagreeing. I’m sure you’ve disagreed many times with almost everybody in your life at some point.

chaveirim, true, I think I meant to say posting personal things. I’m not sure where the disagreeing part came from.

to some of us, it is no big deal. I once received an email from my Rav asking if I was the one commenting on a local story on the main page. It happened again when another friend (who I had not seen for some time but we exchanged emails every now and then) sent an email asking if I was commenting in YW.

Simple philosphy: speak truthfully, be reasonably intelligent in your argument/statement/comment, try to be coherent in how you phrase it, be open to at least listen to the other side as you might actually learn something and you really do not have to fear if someone else figures out who you are. in otherwords, if I would not get up in front of an audience and make the same comment, I would not say it here.

Everyone knows that there is only one six hundred kilo bear who can type and that he seems to have insider information regarding the details of Jewish life in the abandoned sections of Creedmoor Psychiatric Center.

Kapusta, good question! I side with ames. SOOO many people know who MEPAL really is and I just tell them to join the loony fun! I don’t say anything here that I wouldn’t tell them so there is really nothing to hide.

don’t know if i’d tell everybody & anybody to join – depends who it is, i guess – but i’d go on posting as always.

I think the anonymity is what makes it easier to post. There are times I have strongly disagreed with someone, and there are times that people have strongly disagreed with me. It is more comfortable to know that were I to meet any of you IRL, especially those who have vocally disagreed, that I didn’t have to feel any awkwardness, because I would be unaware. By the same token there are many posters here whom I would love to know IRL.

    So I guess it’s a double-edged sword.

I would deny it. Anonymity is a way to say what you really want to say without having to worry about the consenquences. Many people seem to think of it as a way to say something you know is wrong and because you dont want everyone to know that you believe such things you choose to remain anonymiss, but this isnt true. Just because you would be looked at as different for say something that doesnt mean what your saying is wrong.

People need to learn that what you believe is not necessarily the truth and to listen to other peoples opinions. You dont need to agree with it just learn to listen without yelling and bashing people for thier beliefs.

But then I realized, that I talk to you guys more often than the real people in my life! That is very fortunate!

Fortunate or sad? Just kidding Ames LOL!

I am more forceful about my opinions in the CR, but I am generally the same in real life…except IRL, I am less confrontational with people I don’t know. BUt with my family and friends, I generally say what I think.

I probably wouldn’t care too much and would continue posting as normal. There are some people who already know who I am IRL and, in any event, the positions that I purport to hold in my writings here and on other online forums are the same ones I publicly acknowledge anyway.

(So, why do I keep up the anonymity? That a good question… one that I’m not certain I really have an adequate answer to.)

i wouldn’t mind people knowing who i am. i am sort of a people person once i get to know someone a little bit (and doing it anonymously counts which would thereby include just about everyone in YWNCR)

We sure do, the editor even lets us come down to his garden and we pick them ourselves. The leftovers get baked into a pie YUMMY!

I KNOW that. You don’t deserve one anyways. Sorry. Maybe submit a mod application to the editor. When you become a one, you can let me know so that we can work on the blackberry’s then, with my discretion, of course.

I have a question. What would you do if you know you for sure know who someone here is? The person definatly doesnt know me I just know cuz her email address is the same as her username here…Should I just keep it to myself and not mention it to her at all?

I’m home free, my email has nothing relating to cabbage or kapusta.

mepal, do you have an extra blackberry for the good queen? 😉

btw, I know more than one member IRL, and I might know another one. :/

kapusta (and anyone else that got the misconception), like I said, blackberry’s are only for mods (specifically 72) AFTER they are discovered. I’d make an exception for you, dear queen, but then I’d have to supply one for xoxo and probably the wolf as well. Unless we ‘discover’ each other, of course. Then that would be another story entirely…

    #799683

I once almost asked someone about this…I was set up with a family for Shabbos once when I was in Israel and the wife was on Facebook, I asked her why since she seemed pretty right-wing, and she answered that used for certain purposes, it can be okay. I then asked hesitantly “And do you use the Internet for other stuff also?” and she looked at me strangely and said “Yes, of course, what kind of stuff are you asking about?” and I almost asked if she was on YWN because she reminded me of a few people on here, but I decided to keep my mouth closed. Aside from Daniel Neubauer, most people here like to remain anonymous, so I figured I would let it be. I’ve just always wondered…:) Personally, though, I wouldn’t mind if someone I knew found me on the CR. I don’t think it would change anything about what I write.

Remember the inflammatory posting wars, where members made egregious personal attacks on one another, resulting in multiple threads getting closed? Maybe we can avoid that kind of stuff recurring if we imagine before pressing the send button that someone we know will read our post and know we wrote it.

mepal, well its the thought that counts. In fact the thought that you were considering supplying me with one is taking up all that room instead of the actual blackberry. 😉

its so funny how ive been in the cr for almost 2 years and i discovered so many people in this time. The people that i discovered don’t even know i discovered them. One of the people i had a major argument with a while ago in the cr, a little while later i found out who it was, i felt very stupid although he didn’t know its me

I have strong opinions that I express both IRL and online.

I say things that some might not like to hear but that I honestly think, need to be said.

I don’t ususally get “confrontational” about it unless someone first gets that way with me, then I respond the same way I am treated.

This is pretty much true both online and IRL, with one exception.

In IRL if the person “confronting me” is much bigger then me and looks like he is looking for excuses to start something physical I may back off a bit.

I do not change my opinion or apologize for it, but I may not state it as strongly.

Then there have been times when I stated my opinion in cases like that even more strongly.

Since no one knows what psychos who live for vendettas, might be reading these posts; For that reason, I appreciate the anonymity, of this website.

    #799694

Someone I know figured me out pretty much as soon as I made my own username. Yeah, I’m still posting as you see though now I’ll be more careful with what I say. Maybe I’ll make a new account and then I could say whatever I want to.

I once almost had my cover blown but my quick thinking saved me.

Some one said to me “Hey you have to see this, some one is impersonating you. Check out this website called ‘The Yeshiva World’ and go to the ‘Coffee Room’. There’s a thread there called ‘The Riddle Thread…’ where someone goes by the name Dr. Pepper and asks the same kind of riddles that you would.”

I said “Oh, it’s probably a former student of mine. Can you do me a favor? Tell the guy to get a life. Thanks”

The person must have just been a lurker because they never posted it. That was the closest call I ever had.

I’d still stick around. If you read my writings, you’d know that I was never all that hung up on the anonymity. And besides, the opinions I express here are no different than the ones I would express in real life.

I can’t believe I missed this thread 10 months ago (unless I was not a CR addict yet), but my wife tells me this is probably going to happen one day (and she will shoot me when it does!)

Truth is, if any of my “real world” hockers were to read my posts, they would spot me in a flash, as the ideas / writing style is what they hear / get e-mails from me all the time.

Biggest fear? My future mechutonim (or worse, future D-I-Ls!) are CR members and will “out” me right at the l’chaim!

Uh oh, there goes my negotiating tactics!

I am a very private person & I value other ppls privacy too,

so I would prob deny it, though I would continue posting as before.

There’s like only a few ppl who know my true identity

(unless someone blabbed!)though I don’t believe they are frequent posters. It’s nice to get into a heated discussion with no shouting, just CAPS!! One can always get to the truth & root of something when enough ppl & a variety of opinions are shared,

    (or forced upon us) 😉

    #799702

I found my uncle on here, a serious controversial poster (you all hate him) and I told him in person 😛 He’ll probably figure me out from this post. Now won’t that be embarrassing.
