In my line of work, my customers many times refer to me with the title of “Rabbi” even though I never got semicha.
Should I constantly correct them or just let it go?
November 30, 2014 4:19 pm at 4:19 pm #1045090popa_bar_abbaParticipantGet semicha?
November 30, 2014 4:22 pm at 4:22 pm #1045091Little FroggieParticipantNo. Go live up to the title. And tell ’em I said so.

The title doesn’t mean a whole lot these days. Every yodle calls himself rabbi.
November 30, 2014 9:46 pm at 9:46 pm #1045095voos epesMemberIm a rebbe also
November 30, 2014 9:52 pm at 9:52 pm #1045096eekMemberNo, you’re not.
November 30, 2014 10:20 pm at 10:20 pm #1045097mobicoParticipantFrumGuy, I don’t know what line of work you are in. Nowadays, anyone who teaches Torah is called “Rabbi”. Those who have beards and work in Torah institutions are called “Rabbi”. Those who are “identifiable” as Yirei Shamamyim – either outwardly or due to their actions and/or the way they conduct themselves – are called “Rabbi”.
On the one hand, l’Ma’am ha’Emes you should probably make the point that you don’t have Semicha. On the other hand, as long as you feel that you are making a Kiddush Hashem in your work, then perhaps it is not necessary to protest beyond that. (I follow this advice myself, as I am in a situation that is at least somewhat similar.)

November 30, 2014 10:40 pm at 10:40 pm #1045099🐵 ⌨ GamanitParticipantRabbi and Rav are two different things. You don’t need to have semicha for somone to call you Rabbi. You can politely say “Just call me Mr. Frumguy. If they continue calling you Rabbi just let it be.
November 30, 2014 11:33 pm at 11:33 pm #1045100WolfishMusingsParticipantWhenever someone calls me “Rabbi,” I make it a point to object. Giving the honorific to those who don’t have the title cheapens it for those who have put in the hard work to earn it.
That being said, however, I can understand how some people, acting ex-officio, should be called “Rabbi” in the context of doing their duties, even if they don’t have semicha. The prime example that I can think of is a classroom rebbi, who should be called “Rabbi [fill in name]” by students, parents and colleagues with regard to his duties whether or not he has semicha.

December 1, 2014 6:04 pm at 6:04 pm #1045102Sam2ParticipantPeiyos might be enough to be a Rebbe but it doesn’t make one a Rabbi.
It’s funny, I though having Peiyos just meant one wasn’t Oveir on the Issur D’Oraisa of Bal Takif…
December 1, 2014 9:44 pm at 9:44 pm #1045103eekMemberNo, that would be having peyos. Having peiyes has nothing to do with that issur.

You’re such a caricature of smugness that I’ beginning to find you entertaining.
December 2, 2014 5:38 pm at 5:38 pm #1045109yehudayonaParticipantThere used to be a discount store in Watertown, MA where the greeter called anyone who walked in wearing a yarmulka “Reverend.” It was pretty funny.
