I was listening to this podcast by Yehuda Geberer on the history of Aleksander Chasidus and their Machlokes with Ger. It’s interesting content. His conclusion though was that Aleksander’s mission was to be anti-Ger. How accurate is that take?
My thoughts are that Machlokes between Rebbes and chasidus is not a new phenomenon, but it’s interesting to hear how they played out.
The idea of wealthy people supporting a son in law learning isn’t a new thing and something gvirim always took pride in.

February 18, 2023 8:57 pm at 8:57 pm #2166950lakewhutParticipantAccording to wikipedia Ger was biggest then Aleksander then Radomsk
February 18, 2023 11:06 pm at 11:06 pm #2167076ujmParticipantWikipedia is unreliable, especially on Jewish issues.
February 19, 2023 8:55 am at 8:55 am #2167108AviraDeArahParticipantIf you’ve ever learned yismach yisroel, one of if not my favorite chasidishe seforim, you wouldn’t dream that such an accusation has merit. The rebbe had a palpable love of klal yisroel that you can feel when you read his holy words.
February 21, 2023 1:42 pm at 1:42 pm #2167886YosefSebrowParticipantThe war changed many things. Many small groups became big and vice versa. America became dominated by chassidim, Eretz Yisroel became dominated by Litvaks.
February 21, 2023 3:54 pm at 3:54 pm #2167943ujmParticipantReb Yosef: I think Eretz Yisroel was even more dominated by Litvaks before the war than today.
February 21, 2023 5:00 pm at 5:00 pm #2167958AviraDeArahParticipantOld yishuv yidden were a mix of Hungarian, litvishe, chasidishe… I don’t think one was more dominant than another.
February 21, 2023 8:40 pm at 8:40 pm #2167968ujmParticipantAvira, how were the prewar demographics different than today’s demographics?
February 22, 2023 1:42 pm at 1:42 pm #2168148eishes chayilParticipantACORDING TO SOME TCHORKIV WAS ONE OF THE BIGGEST, SADIGUR TOO. TODAY THEY HAVE NOTHING. GER BEFORE THE WAR WAS 100,000 CHASSIDIM AOORDING TO THE IMREI EMES, SFTER THE WAR THEY NUMBERED NOT MORE THAN 250 PEOPLE WORLDWIDE, TODAY THEY ARE OVER 60,000 INCLUDING ALL AGES (INCULDING THE 1500-2000 PEOPLE FROM REB SHAULS KEHILLA, ALL AGES). IT IS ESTIMATED THAT ALEXANDER ALSO REACHED TO THAT NUMBERS BEFORE WORLD WAR 2, RADOMSK WAS ALSO COMPLETELY WIPED OUT. DONT FOREGET OUT OF 6 MILLION YIDEEN KILLED, 3 MILLION WERE POLISH, AND OUT OF 3.3 MILLION YIDDEN IN POLAND 3 MILLION WERE KILLED, INCLUDING THE 100,000 GERER CHASSIDIM, 100 THOUSAND ALEXANDER, AND THE SAME FOR RADOMSK. ONLY LESS THAN 10% OF POLISH JEWRY SURVIVED WHOM ONLY A SMALL PERCENT REMAINED FRUM YIDDEN
February 22, 2023 4:03 pm at 4:03 pm #2168234lakewhutParticipantAvirah the litvish were more prominent in the old yishuv as the Talmidei hagra were the first wave of frum yidden who were willing to move there when most of European Jews were stuck in their bubble.
February 22, 2023 5:52 pm at 5:52 pm #2168306AviraDeArahParticipantLake, there were chasidim too, like the bas ayin early on, and later rav shlomke zeville, which come to mind
February 23, 2023 12:55 pm at 12:55 pm #2168632eishes chayilParticipantBY THE WAY THE YERUSHALIERMER KEHILLOS, (THE REB ARHELECH) ARE ALL FROM BEFORE THE WAR. REB YOSSEF CHAIM SONNENFELD. TOO
