Can someone explain what, why, and who this is all about?
The Asifa is here to help us fight the yetzer hora. The oilem has learnt that it is not the right approach to ban the internet, and the gedolei hador are taking a new approach. They want to have a gathering of clall yisrael to show support for how to properly use the internet
The truth is nobody really knows.
They will not tell even Rabbis who will speak or what they will speak about
I don’t know that we have learned that. I still think is possible for a very many homes not to have internet, especially if viable options are set up where people can have easy access for the real necessities. (There are places where this works very well.)
I think the Gedolim have become realistic not in the sense that they agree that we need the internet in homes, but that they realize that the “masses” will simply not listen to such a ban.

Actually from rumors Ive heard the event will be mostly Tefillot and very little about the internet (They will be giving out booklets with filter companies)
It seems certain groups who were against the internet (Satmar?) would not endorse the asifa unless it was done this way

But seriously the Expo has already been cancelled, that is no rumor the latest flyers posted around town say so
What does cancelling the expo have to do with the content of the speeches ?
