news reports now describe hurricane irene as a class 3, likely to become a class 4 and possibly a humungous class 5.

although the following projection might change, right now they think it could hit the eastern coast including the new york area

Only three hurricanes have struck the United States with category 5 strength in the past century: The unnamed hurricane that destroyed much of the Florida Keys in 1935, Camille in 1969, and Andrew in 1988.

I remember as a kid (20+ years ago) a hurricane hitting NYC, aldough by the time it made land fall it was much weaker it still broke many sukkos in my neighborhood. (It was a day before Yom Kippur). Anybody remembers?

I think you mean Hurricane Gloria. And it happened in 1985. I remember taking apart our Sukkah before the hurricane hit. We also took apart my parents’ Sukkah. It eas a good thing that we did. The winds were so strong, that many Sukkahs were completely destroyed.

I remember Hurricane Esther in 1961. I was a little kid but I was convinced she was Jewish since she had the same given name as my late grandmother.

are men allowed to mix with female-named hurricanes?

Mod 80, I think ron has a good point. You shouldn’t be calling this hurricane by its name since you are male and it is female. Didn’t you pay attention to the 4th lesson of the 8th week of Mod training?

Irene the Polish cleaning lady? She’s never on time, don’t worry. Just lock up your silver and your jewelry and everything will be OK. :)))

    update from the AP:

Tourists began evacuating from a tiny barrier island off North Carolina on Wednesday as Hurricane Irene strengthened to a major Category 3 storm over the Bahamas with the East Coast in its sights.

    #802357

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a statement on Wednesday he had ordered the state’s Office of Emergency Management to prepare for possible impact from Irene.

Cuomo said coastal zones were most at risk, although inland areas could get hit by heavy rainfall and strong winds.

Forecasters have warned that even if the center of the hurricane stays offshore as it tracks up the mid-Atlantic coast from the weekend, its wide, swirling bands could lash cities including Washington and New York with winds and rain, knock out power, trigger coastal storm surges and cause flooding

As North Carolinas governor Bev Perdue said prepare for the worst pray for the beSt. It can’t hurt to prepare you might as well be ready then not be and realize lastminute that ur not ready for the storm.

    #802359

Irene will likely then strengthen into a powerful Category 4 hurricane during its dangerous assault on the Bahamas into Thursday.

After leaving the Bahamas, Irene will take aim at New England this weekend.

was a time, when all hurricanes were named for females, that I wouldn’t mix with them at all. Getting blown around in the wind could lead to mixed dancing!

no, but she will huff and puff and blow your house down.

Though in my experience, she usually just blows pieces of aluminum siding off, and turns them into dangerous, sharp object flying at 90+ miles per hour.

We are truly fortunate to live in an age when hurricane’s paths can be predicted with some reliability. The first indication that all new englanders had that the hurricane of 1938 was coming was when it made landfall in Rhode Island. Authorities in Boston had less than an hour before the storm would inundate them. That was not enough time. Hundreds of people were killed.

Today, many scientists, pilots, flight crews, meteorologists, computer programmers, historians have used their time and great minds, given to them by their creator, to solve the hurricane prediction problem.

Now we have DAYS to prepare so no one in the midatlantic or northeast need die. Most of the people who do die during these affairs are usually doing something foolish, or trying to rescue someone doing something foolish. Prepare, make sure your neighbors are prepared, then enjoy the show. Then help clean up after the storm.

    Have a happy hurricane.

Tehillim may be in order, but preparation comes first. This is really a case of Hashem helps those who help themselves. Clear your yard of debris that can become deadly missiles in high winds and follow the advice of the authorities. They know of what they speak! If everyone acts properly, only property will be damaged, no people hurt.

    Preparation first, tehillim second, please.

I heard that several Rabbonim have already told their communities to keep their radios on over Shabbos in case the order to evacuate comes in.

If I read the posek right, it’s battery-powered radios, in case the power goes off.

The message: have a SAFE and happy shabbat, with an emphasis on the safe, so you can have many more.

“NYC, Mid-Atlantic Brace for Irene’s Violent Strike

Irene remains on a path that will take the hurricane dangerously close to, if not over, the mid-Atlantic coastline and New York City Saturday night into Sunday, posing a serious danger to millions of people.

Irene could be “once-in-50-year” hurricane for the Northeast.

The AccuWeather.com Hurricane Center is confident that Irene will strike the Outer Banks of North Carolina on Saturday as a strong Category 3.

Beyond that point, Irene will track extremely close to or over the mid-Atlantic coast and New York City before plowing into western New England. This could mean the worst effects from a hurricane in the region in 50 years.

Irene is expected to track near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay and Delmarva coast Saturday night, then could pass within 30 miles of New York City on Sunday as a weakening Category 2 hurricane.”
