I am fairly certain that all the explanations of Whoopie Goldberg’s name discussed above are wrong. And of course, ujm’s story is wronger than most. Was he trying to be funny or factual? He/she is not good at either.
As for her given name, Caryn, how ironic – “Karen” is slang for an annoying white woman who considers herself entitled to special privileges and likes to complain about black people.

If you’re going to take a name of a specific ethnicity, you have to have heard of it somewhere and be sure it was Jewish right?Her taking the name proves one theory I have. No one in flyover country cares, and most people probably don’t even know it’s Jewish. So why did these Jewish actors of yesteryear feel the need to change their names other than to make themselves easier to recognize or pronounce possibly in some cases? Having a Jewish name obviously doesn’t do you harm.

What the common sense person says above is in Wikipedia. The mother named her so to get ahead in the acting field and she is not Jewish. Whoopie is named after a whoopie cushion.
I have a true name change story. The stepfather of a friend passed away a few years ago , and his name was Murphy. Apparently he had changed his name so he wouldn’t appear to be Jewish. My friend said the irony was that his stepfather spoke with a heavy , pronounced, Yiddish accent.
