I’m so lost about Israeli politics. I’m old enough to know what a coalition government is. Could someone fill me in (in short).
a. What are the parties, and how many seats did each party get
b. How many seats do you need to form a coalition
Could someone fill me in?
January 25, 2013 7:46 pm at 7:46 pm #924261susheeMemberThere are 120 members in the kenesset, so you need a majority of 61 to have a government. No single party ever had 61 on its own, so the biggest party (usually) forms a coalition with enough other parties to have at least 61 seats.
About 36 parties ran in the election, but only 12 parties got enough votes to get any seats.

They take the total number of votes divide by 120 and that how many seats you get, there is a cutoff point at 2%
32 parties ran for Kennesst. Most did not make the threashhold, those closest of those was Otzma B’Yisrol
Of those who got enough
Hadash 4
Unied Arab List 4
Balad 3

To get people to join the coalition, you agree to make concessions in areas that are important to them and to give them Ministries so they have some power besides voting for laws.
January 27, 2013 2:54 pm at 2:54 pm #924266zahavasdadParticipantYou need a coalition to pass any laws.
If the ruling party tries to pass a law and it fails, its called a vote of no-confidence and the government falls and new elections are required to be schedaled
January 27, 2013 3:33 pm at 3:33 pm #924267ShowjoeMemberif there is no coalition formed in (?)90(?) days, there are reelections.
January 27, 2013 3:58 pm at 3:58 pm #924268simcha613ParticipantIf a coalitions is formed, which means they have the majority, they can pass any laws they want? Does the opposition have any power at all?
January 27, 2013 4:18 pm at 4:18 pm #924269zahavasdadParticipantOpposition has bascially no power at all. Majority can pass any laws they want, but you have to realize because its a coalition not all parties have the same goal.
A simple yet example is the draft. Yesh Atid and Shas might be in the same co-alition. Yesh Atid is for the draft and Shas against.
It isnt as simple as you think, Parties in the ruling coalition have many things in common , but not everything
