This year the State of NJ is paying a consortium (all the elementary & high school yeshivas in Lakewood) for mandated school busing in Lakewood. The state will pay $884.00 per mandated student for transportation. The consortium will hire the buses. Any savings in transporting mandated students may be used to pay for busing for those who live within 2 miles from their yeshiva.
1)Can the yeshivas set up a busing system to transport 30,000 yeshiva students in less then a month, as the program was only approved in August? In order to earn this savings they are going to have stagger the starting and ending times.
2) Since this is coming from the state and not the school budget, and the school monitor no longer has control over it, how will it effect increases to the school budget? Also since Courtesy busing is off the chopping block, what is the school monitor going to cut?
3) Will more students become mandated as yeshivas will have a vested interest in getting more money?
4) The Town of Lakewood promised to pay for courtesy busing for public school students. will they fulfill that promise even if the yeshiva busing fails?
5) This is a pilot program for three years during which time infrastructure improvement are to be made. Who is going to pay for sidewalks and traffic lights on Route 9 & 88 and elsewhere?
6) Any comments about my spelling or grammatical errors are also welcome.
August 22, 2016 12:25 am at 12:25 am #1170572JosephParticipantThe new law the NJ State legislature passed revising the payment module for Yeshiva/private school bussing is an unambiguous victory for the frum community. The bottom line is that it has a net result in providing State funding for private school bussing.
So much for the naysayers here (zd and company) who kept parroting that the State would never acquiesce to additional State funding for private school transportation.
They did.
August 22, 2016 12:27 am at 12:27 am #1170573MenoParticipant“within 2 miles from their yeshiva” –> “within 2 miles of their yeshiva”
“Courtesy busing” –> “courtesy busing”
“improvement” –> “improvements”
August 22, 2016 1:21 am at 1:21 am #1170574iacisrmmaParticipantSince most people on this list are not experts in this area, you should contact the government liaisons from the Aguda or the OU.
August 22, 2016 2:03 am at 2:03 am #1170575–ParticipantIn order to earn this savings they are going to have stagger the starting and ending times.
Compared to other schools, the starting and ending times of Yeshivas are already staggered. And compared to Brooklyn and Monsey, more Yeshivas (at least that’s my perception) are using bussing contractors that can take advantage of the staggered times.
August 22, 2016 1:00 pm at 1:00 pm #1170577Abba_SParticipantThe Lakewood School Board Monitors are suppose to be experts and you see how well that worked. They created higher budget deficits then when they started and antagonized everyone. Nobody can predict the future so even the OU or Aguda wouldn’t know. But maybe the posters in the YWN coffee room will have a better solutions.
The yeshivas will have to provide transportation for 1.5 students for every student funded by the state through greater efficiency.
Will the current staggering system generate enough savings to provide school busing for all. I don’t know, only time will tell.
August 22, 2016 2:08 pm at 2:08 pm #1170578JosephParticipantAbba, the new law requires NJ to pay the yeshivas the full maximum allotment per student qualified for mandatory transpiration. It will cost the yeshivas less than the full amount to actually transport them. It cost less even when the government was paying the bus companies directly. The yeshivas will be able to save even more and use the extra (saved) money to pay for the non-mandatory students.

The fact that really is – in NJ even though they changed the law who said it’s Mutter? Yeah, it’s good for some Frum people, but not for others! NJ has the highest real estate taxes in the country.
If the government does it by themselves, so it has nothing to do with Yidden. But if Frum people pushed the government for services and they got it. Who said it’s Mutter to make me pay, in taxes, for your bussing?!?
August 22, 2016 5:28 pm at 5:28 pm #1170580Abba_SParticipantHealth- Why is it prohibited to take money from the state. Are you one of those people who when they file their income taxes don’t take exemptions. By the way I live and pay taxes in NYC, I and my kids never took school buses, we took mass transit to and from school.
Are you saying that the majority of the state assembly and senate are Yidden, I don’t think so. What happened was they thought that by putting in a monitor the problem would be solved. I believe the state is scared of a Federal Civil Right Lawsuit and this is a way of avoiding itm by showing that they tried to accommodate everyone.
August 22, 2016 6:09 pm at 6:09 pm #1170581zahavasdadParticipantThe fact of the matter is people with large familes do not pay alot if any income taxes.
You get a tax credit per dependent from the federal government. As frum people tend to have large families they pay little if any income taxes.
I think in 2016 the child tax credit is $1500 per kid, They is a tax credit, not a deduction meaning it comes off your tax liablity at 100% off ratehr than your tax bracket with is usually 15%, but could be 28%

Anybody can Schnorr. It’s not Osser. I was talking about that the state takes taxes for the bussing. Who said that it’s Mutter for them to increase my or other people’s taxes, because some Jews want bussing?!? It was the Frum Jews who complained to the State – “It’s not fair!”
I agree it wasn’t fair; but to divert the taxes for Jewish bussing it’s not fair to Goyim & Jews who don’t need bussing!
What they should have done is cut the real estate taxes for e/o.
Stop with giving money to failure school districts & stop with giving money for bussing, whether it’s for private schools or for public schools!
August 23, 2016 9:22 am at 9:22 am #1170583Abba_SParticipantDid the the state INCREASE taxes in NJ? No. Are the Jews trying to get a new entitlement? No, courtesy busing has been around for decades. All this bill did is, fix a problem that the state created when it VIOLATED the frum Jews Civil Rights by putting in a school monitor with veto power. The state is trying to avoid a federal law suit as it will be hard to justify the violating of the frum Jews’ voting rights so that they can deny the victim’s children their school bus entitlement.
I would agree with you that there should be no taxes for public schools at all . That would solve the problem. That is not the case, the state not only taxes you for schooling but also funds many failing school districts through out the state.
Since you don’t want school busing. How many miles of sidewalks are you willing to SPONSOR? How much are school crossing guard going to cost? What about the grid lock you are going to be causing? Is it worth it?

Didn’t you read my post? I wrote – “Stop with giving money to failure school districts”
“Since you don’t want school busing. How many miles of sidewalks are you willing to SPONSOR? How much are school crossing guard going to cost?”
You yourself posted -“I and my kids never took school buses, we took mass transit to and from school.”
Stop with the enormous cost for school bussing and develop a Mass transit for Lakewood! At least the cities where they have poured millions of dollars into the school districts have also mass transit system’s. This would be beneficial to e/o not just the school parents!
“What about the grid lock you are going to be causing? Is it worth it?”
Now I believe you that you don’t live in Lakewood. The traffic during the school year, at certain times of day, competes with Manhattan during rush hour!
August 23, 2016 11:18 pm at 11:18 pm #1170585Abba_SParticipantZD- 47% of the taxpayers in the USA pay no taxes, so it is possible that many lower income Lakewood residents also don’t pay any income tax. The Federal child credit is $1,000.00 per child under 17 years old as of Dec 31.
Health- You don’t want to pay for school busing because it increases your taxes but you think nothing of having your fellow taxpayers pay for miles of sidewalks and school crossing guards. Plus they will have to have an environmental impact study showing walking to school is safe. An easier solution is ban school busing through out the state or at least in Lakewood. It’s not going to happen.
Look at it this way if the state loses the lawsuit over this you maybe looking at paying for school vouchers for the over 30,000 yeshiva students at at least $10,000.00 each which will really raise your taxes.

You’re in a dream world if you think my real estate taxes would be more or equal for those things as opposed to paying for bussing!
“Look at it this way if the state loses the lawsuit over this you maybe looking at paying for school vouchers for the over 30,000 yeshiva students at at least $10,000.00 each which will really raise your taxes”
This state would never pass school vouchers! You obviously don’t know anything about this state!
August 24, 2016 9:16 am at 9:16 am #1170587Abba_SParticipantYou are saying that you can build hundreds of miles of sidewalks along all the streets of Lakewood by the start of school year for less than $20 million, the cost of school busing. What will happen is that your taxes will go up to pay for the sidewalks and because Lakewood continues to grow you will never have adequate sidewalks and will still be paying for school busing forever. I think you are in the dream world.
The state will never agree to school vouchers but just like the south thought there would never be integration in the public schools but the Federal courts mandated it. So too if it can be proven that the state violated the Yeshiva students’ rights the courts can mandate school vouchers to correct past discrimination.

Again it’s obvious that you have an agenda! There are plenty of streets that have sidewalks already. It wouldn’t cost 20 million. Even if it would, or more, it’s a one-time cost, not like bussing which is every year!
“The state will never agree to school vouchers but just like the south thought there would never be integration in the public schools but the Federal courts mandated it. Again you’re in a dream world! How in the world would they win in federal court? I just posted that the federal courts are Antisemitic in the other topic. Even if the state would all of a sudden be scared of the threat, all they’d do is even the playing field. That means no bussing for anyone and/or equal amounts of money per child for every school district!
August 24, 2016 11:05 pm at 11:05 pm #1170589Abba_SParticipantI assume you are aware that they will be raising the gasoline tax in NJ to upgrade NJ’s roads & highways. While there are sidewalks in many part of the town most of the developments don’t have sidewalks connecting them to the downtown area. Also many of the sidewalks are cracked and the children walk in the street. This will probably cost $500 million and still not solve the problem because Lakewood keeps expanding. Also NJ is famous for government corruption.
As far as the federal courts being Antisemitic that is the same logic the Southerner thought when they fought integration and lost. It is 60 years later and they are still busing for integration. Satmer has won in Bloomingberg NY when they denied them the right to vote and blocked them from getting building permits.
As far as no school busing your in a dream world parents will never accept it. As it is some of the “Failing districts” are complaining that the state is giving these funds to Lakewood and not to them. If they are giving equal amount per student then they have to give school vouchers otherwise the district is receiving funds for a service it didn’t provide.

Where did you get 500 mil from? I believed you when you said 20 mil.
Before you post crazy numbers – you need some proof!

I have some experience with the federal courts. Over there in Satmar it was obvious discrimination. Over here – it’s very hard to prove disparate treatment!
“As far as no school busing your in a dream world parents will never accept it.”
Who cares? Did they ask me if I mind if my real estate taxes go up?
“As it is some of the “Failing districts” are complaining that the state is giving these funds to Lakewood and not to them.”
Which districts? The ones that get more money than e/o else or not?
“If they are giving equal amount per student then they have to give school vouchers otherwise the district is receiving funds for a service it didn’t provide.”
What are you talking about? What funds is the district supposed to provide & for what service?
