I have a problem with a shirt. It has a musty smell and I can’t get it out. I febreezed (if that’s a word!) and washed it many times. Do you have suggestions?
November 5, 2009 5:07 am at 5:07 am #667859tamazaballMemberwhy does it smell what touched that shirt?, leave it soaking in hot water with vanish or oxy clean for a couple of hours, see if that works,
November 5, 2009 5:18 am at 5:18 am #667860ronrsrMemberif the smell is moldy, try adding a cup of ammonia to your next wash. Don’t do this if you’re also using bleach, however.
November 5, 2009 5:32 am at 5:32 am #667861mazcaMembermake sure is completely dried, somethimes clothing get a smell because they are not fully dried.
November 5, 2009 9:40 am at 9:40 am #667862PosterMemberPut it in the dryer with a bounce sheet. make sure it dries completely.

Yes, what tamazaball suggested sounds best – oxygen bleach. We in Creedmoor use it to bleach even drug money with great success :)))). (Seriously I use it in exceptionally polluted, super hard water to soak tzitzis and it works very well).
The chemical in it (sodium perborate) should act as a disinfectant and it also reacts with chemicals in the water that may be responsible for the odor.
November 6, 2009 2:13 am at 2:13 am #667864MOMof4MemberI can’t use bleach bec. it’s a black shirt and I can’t dry bec. it will shrink.
November 6, 2009 2:55 am at 2:55 am #667865jphoneMemberPerhaps a few spoons of baking soda in your next load?
They also say coffee is good at absorbing odors.
November 6, 2009 4:41 am at 4:41 am #667866tamazaballMemberMOM oxyclean and vanish are not bleach! they sell it in the supermarket it just takes off dificult stains, i do not use bleach myself it ruins the clothing making it grey and stains everything.
November 8, 2009 11:54 pm at 11:54 pm #667867Who Cares?MemberHang it up outside to get rid of the smell.
November 9, 2009 12:02 am at 12:02 am #667868bein_hasdorimParticipantTry soaking it in lemon juice, or vinegar for 2 hours, then pop in the washing machine, with some non liquid detergent on hot/warm cycle. then dry.
November 9, 2009 5:02 am at 5:02 am #667869tamazaballMemberMOMof4 how did the shirt turn out??
November 9, 2009 6:00 pm at 6:00 pm #667870jphoneMemberIf the smell didnt come out, this will have to be escalated to the level of a Laundry Crisis. Once it is labeled a crisis all the closet askanim will emerge and use their connections at the best chineese laundries to ensure your shirt comes out smelling like a bed of roses.
November 10, 2009 1:22 am at 1:22 am #667871MOMof4MemberThanks y’all for your suggestions. I’m going to try the lemon juice ideanext.
jphone-youre funny!
November 10, 2009 2:16 am at 2:16 am #667872ronrsrMemberfirst, you must get 70 laundresses and launders to sign an appeal. They need not all be Chinese.
November 10, 2009 2:51 am at 2:51 am #667873mazcaMemberBe careful not to put crayons in the dryer. It could ruin all the clothing!!

Thanks in advance!
November 10, 2009 9:10 pm at 9:10 pm #667875anonymrsParticipanti had that with my towels. i was going to throw them out, but my mother in law said that i should wash them in hot water with wisk, and them dry them on high heat. it worked great!!
November 10, 2009 9:49 pm at 9:49 pm #667876smartcookieMemberAnonymrs- thank you. But doesn’t hot water set stains into the fabric?
I rewashed the shirt and sprayed the stains w oxiclean. But it came out with the same ink color again. Nothing changed.
November 11, 2009 7:42 am at 7:42 am #667877williMemberFor any tough stains, I’ve had the best experience with ZOUT. And I’ve also noticed that when soaked overnight in a bowl with Tide (plain or tide with bleach) & water, that was usually enough.
Btw smartcookie for future reference, hairspray is supposed to remove (fresh) ink stains as well so guess it doesn’t hurt to try that as well.
November 11, 2009 2:07 pm at 2:07 pm #667879smartcookieMemberOk….I admit…I took the easy way out and just dumped that shirt last night….

November 15, 2009 2:32 am at 2:32 am #667882mybatMemberTamazaball toss them and buy him new ones or tell him to wear it like that (tell him that they look like he bought them like that!);)
