This “can leave the radio on” bothers me. It’s either a Chiyuv or it’s Assur.

Sam2: Why might it be assur?

Hashma’as Kol. At least for Ashkenazim. The Mechaber seems to be Matir. But if you’re working with the assumption that leaving the radio on is Assur every Shabbos, then either there is a Safek Sakanah and you’re Mechuyav to leave the radio on or there isn’t and this Shabbos is no different that any other.

bombamaniac “the hurricane isnt hitting us until sunday so i see no reason to leave the radio on on shabbos “

But the order to people living in Zone A to evacuate was to be given on Saturday ( as it wAS ) ( Coney Island, Manhanttan Beach, Brighton Beach, Far Rockaway etc ) and Motzei Shabbos was too late to evacuate

The mandatory evacuation order in NYC for Zone A was given on Friday, before Shabbos. The legal deadline to evacuate was 5 PM Saturday. But it was known before Shabbos already.

All the more reason, that if one chose to ignore the Friday mandatory evacuation, the radio should have been left on to be able to find out if it had gotten worse and more dangerous to stay

According to the Achiezer email that I received, the order for evacuation was apparently moved up to Fri. – and that email came in at around 5 pm erev Shabbos.
