Hi, I recently purchased the song ‘Ich bin ich’ by avraham fried on itunes From the Album Ah Mechayeh! & Other Yiddish Songs.
Does anyone have the lyrics for it? translation from the yiddish would be a plus but lyrics would really be great.

No, popa, the knock knock was from “Ich” on Yiddish Gems II (in Yiddish it goes, “klop, klop”).
Which, by the way, is a stirah to “Ich bin Ich”.
DY, that was a very good he’ara.
I loved Yiddish Gems II, but the “Ich” song always irritated me and I used to skip over it. Aside from the repetitiveness, I just couldn’t get the Rebbe’s message.
Question: Is complete hisbatlus of the self required to the point that we expunge the “I” word from our vocabulary entirely??

Ich bin flattered that you’d think I would have some worthwhile insight.
The best I can offer is that there is a legitimate mehalech in avodas Hashem involving extreme hisbatlus, but that it’s not for you or me.
I actually thought that “A Mother’s Heart” from Volume I was more shver.
I’ve always had difficulty with that story. It’s a great lesson, but it seemed like extreme extortion to get to that point. Not questioning anyone’s gadlus chas veshalom. I guess there are just different mehalchim.
When asked who is there, “It is I” seemed to be, as least according to the rebbe in the lesson he wished to give at that moment to that talmid, to be a bit overpompous. I don’t thing anyone ever meant to purge the entire expression of first person from the language, just the self introduction of I, as though “I” needs no further introduction or explanation.
As in, l’havdil, “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.”

Some stories are not said as Mussar for you to be acting that way, but rather to reveal the depth and dimensions of Avodas Hashem. When you think you are near the top step you start slowing down. When you get a sudden glimpse of where the top step really is you pick up speed again. (Unless you are of the type that gives up because of that, which is what the Mishna addresses, Hamelacha Meruba… Velo Alecha Hamelacha Ligmor.)
When you hear a story of a lofty Madreiga what you can do is to take some part of that idea which is within your reach. For example, instead of saying, “I came with three others,” you can say, “There were four of us.”
But the truth is, if I were outside my Rebbe’s door I wouldn’t either announce myself as ‘me’.

The Yiddish Gems songs are not by Avraham Fried. He only sings them.
Yom Tov Erlich composed them. AS well as those on Ich Hub Gevart by MBD. There is also a Zishe Schmelczer CD with some of his as well.
