What are the requirements in the Torah for a warrior to marry a prisoner of war?

July 13, 2011 1:44 pm at 1:44 pm #785880Derech HaMelechMemberThe requirements of the Torah can be found in Parshas Ki Seitzei (Devarim 21:10-14). The gemara in kiddushin 21b-22a explains a bit more as well.
July 13, 2011 5:24 pm at 5:24 pm #785881DroidMemberCan you summarize? From the bit I recall offhand, she has to grow her nails very long and some other requirements. Also, under what circumstances can he even bring home such a bride?
July 13, 2011 8:45 pm at 8:45 pm #785882shlishiMemberThere is also a waiting period before he can proceed with the marriage (for the purpose of hoping he will reconsider his decision to marry her as it is not a good idea.) It also says the children she bears will be bad.
July 13, 2011 11:07 pm at 11:07 pm #785883DroidMemberHow long does he have to wait?
July 14, 2011 12:49 am at 12:49 am #785884cherrybimParticipantYou got to be an idiot to marry one of them, an ?????? ????? ?????? , especially when there are so many wonderful Jewish Bais Yaakov girls around. This was basically a one time dispensation for a righteous soldier to satisfy his yetzer hara in battle, but the Torah discouraged him to marry her.
July 14, 2011 1:48 am at 1:48 am #785885yaakov doeParticipantDroid: Why? Are you in the military or looking to join?
July 14, 2011 2:21 am at 2:21 am #785886DroidMemberYaakov: Unlike the Torah, I doubt any contemporary military allows its soldiers to marry a prisoner it captured.
July 14, 2011 6:05 am at 6:05 am #785887Midwest2ParticipantNotice that the section on yefas to’ar is right next to the section on the rebellious son. The commentaries say this is deliberate. If you marry someone only for physical gratification it will wear off, and you will come to hate her. From that situation will come a son who rebels against the Torah. It was only permitted as a sop to the Yetzer Hara, and I doubt that many soldiers actually used it.
July 14, 2011 10:10 am at 10:10 am #785888RavKahaneTzadakMemberyou gotta shave her head, make her nails grow long, no perfume or makeup, wear unflattering clothes, and wait a long time.
The point was to make you not interested in her anymore.
I’m gonna guess that it worked pretty often.
July 14, 2011 1:45 pm at 1:45 pm #785889shlishiMemberI don’t know if POW is the correct term per se. The women were from the areas that the Jewish soldiers captured.
