great thread to start bc very hard to get this info anywhere i heard that back in the old days (90’s) that mercaz was a place for hockerish phony frum guys but that was 20 years ago it is quite probable that that has changed

observer: Not only is that incorrect, it’s ossur to be mekabel.

hillcrest: This was already covered in another thread on here recently, TOMO isn’t covered in the same length but have a look:

I understand where your coming from, but insofar as loshon ho’ra (and motzi shem ra) – repeating it is effectively the same as being mekabel even if you put it in a “doubtful light” unless it falls under the criterion of being “l’toeles” (in this case I don’t believe it does).

forsure it changed… someone asked about these yeshivos on thursday.. i know mercaz.. the past few years the boys have done very well there. black hat yeshiva not necessarily white shirt during the week. they give the boys a cheshek to learn and teach them how. boys who do very well there continue on the the mir.

Don’t you just love the people that say that they are not mekabel the lashon hara, but as a public service, they’ll pass it on anyway? They say they don’t believe it, they also say that that which they didn’t believe in the first place probably changed, (Kol haomer lo lavisi, k’omer lo parati) but I’ll still share it with the world.

I wish the Mods of this coffeeroom would put a permanent moratorium on people asking for opinions about specific mosdos. It degenerates into a lashon hara about the institutions virtually all the time, which can be a very serious issur. And none of the leaders of those places ever come here to defend themselves anyway! So all you get is one sided innuendo provided by anonymous people!! And the target is Torah!

what type of people do these places attract what type of learning is it is it very strict or chilled out how are the dorms where do people go after how long do they stay do they go to college or ner yisroel college what are the neighborhoods like what can you do around there what are you allowed to do where do people who go here usually come from (High schools)

To give a more recent account of mercaz hatorah than “the ’90s” ( as observeroftheyeshivish so eloquently shared) ,I will share my view on mercaz 2013. I learned in mir yeshiva this past zman and have met numerous mercaz bochurim all of whom are genuine and devoted ovday hashem. Tomo is great yeshiva as well but it should be noted that since mercaz has had more 3rd year bochurim than tomo for the past couple years it has very limited space. You will probably have a harder time getting in to mercaz due to the limited space and the deluge of applicants.
