Where is it brought down in the Seforim Hakedoshim that meshana makom, meshana mazal? And when and how does the principle apply?
February 19, 2012 6:34 pm at 6:34 pm #852819sam4321ParticipantIt is a gemara in Rosh Hashana 16b . The Gemara says four things tear up a verdict against a person: Charity, crying out to Hashem, changing ones name, changing ones deeds and v’yeish omriem even changing ones place.
February 19, 2012 7:10 pm at 7:10 pm #852820NaysbergMemberSam: So it’s only a vyeish omrim. Much more effective to change ones name, which is a vadai, no?
February 19, 2012 7:43 pm at 7:43 pm #852821MDGParticipantMy impression is that the Gemara is not simply talking about moving. It is talking about Teshuva. Change from bad places to good places that bring merit.
February 19, 2012 8:08 pm at 8:08 pm #852822Bored214ParticipantWell i heard a story (i dont personally know the people but i know their relatives who told me the story) where a couple didnt have kids for 10 years and they were told by some rabbanim – meshane makom, meshane mazal, so they moved house, changed jobs, started over anew with all things that they could – and had a child not long after….
February 19, 2012 8:19 pm at 8:19 pm #852823Meshane, I believe, not meshana.
Anyway, I did it, no regrets so far.
February 19, 2012 8:20 pm at 8:20 pm #852824sam4321ParticipantNaisberg: not sure. MDG: The gemara brings v’yeish omreim from Avraham going to eretz Yisrael, so maybe.
February 20, 2012 1:12 am at 1:12 am #852825HaLeiViParticipantThat Gemara is not talking about Mazal, it is talking about a Gezeira. However, the Gemara in Bava Metzia says that someone who cries for help but didn’t bother moving should be ignored.
