i think its time we realized that a good chunk of the users in cr ( i know for sure at least 7) are mesivta bochurim who have assumed identitiies that have nothing to do with them. i personaly got caught out and i think other buchurim should stop faking it. i dont think fake it till you make it was talking about this.

Do you really think we don’t know this

also why does the fact that you got caught mean the rest of us have to. the atitude of if i cant have it noone can is anethema to a toradige lifestyle and definately not the mehalach a mesivta bachur should have

    #2017232

Lack of capitalization gives the bochurim away (and sometimes stays past graduation).

As I pointed out before that capitalization is a sign of respect which unfortunately they are not being taught.

I’m just used to google docs where they automatically capitalize for you

I went to chassidishe yeshivas learning Torah studies in Yiddish. We learned English vocabulary, grammar and spelling, taking the Regents and gaining an academic high school diploma.

Reb E – I always felt your posts read as if English was not your first language but it never occurred to me to comment, criticize or point it out. He already told you the simple fact that kids are learning to write with technology that automatically capitalizes so it’s not a practiced skill. It’s like checking the lights when you leave the car, something newer drivers don’t even think about cuz its automatic.

Syag, why is it not a practiced skill because they are not being taught, spoon fed as Artscroll spoon feeds the gemora and therefore most people cannot learn on their own. Respect is also something to be desired.

Wow, how wonderful of you to insult a whole community of people who choose to use artscroll to learn because it works best for them. Is that really your purpose, to make people with weaker skills feel worthless? Maybe you could clarify or better yet find something else to criticize.

    > I’m just used to google docs

yes, indeed. One article reports about a “teacher” who “successfully” “taught” 4th graders on zoom. when they came back and she asked them to spell, she heard a sound of (school-provided) iPads switching on – all kids were simply talking into iPads whole year and could not spell anything. I agree that this is arguable, as we lost ability to prepare horses for a ride; to follow direction without Waze, etc. But at least, if you can’t spell without docs, prepare your post in docs. If you didn’t, then THAT is a sign of disrespect, especially if you are talking to older people.

Artscroll may help some, hurt some, but beyond the first layer – they tend to simplify the discussion, translate with a certain slant, and quote only some opinions. So, I think, OK to use it as a help in translating words, looking up references, marvel the clear script comparing with yellow pages of the re-re-reprinted Vilna edition, but not to use it as a source of learning.

AAQ – he threw it out there as an insult, dragging down hundreds of people who may actually be grateful to have it. Is it really worth it?

Syag, If I may… I don’t think R E really meant to malign a whole community, I think he just meant to bgring out a point. That getting used to the easy way can get in the way of stiving for greater heights.

I actually use it extensively. (yes, I am lazy!!)

Aww, I’m not gonna argue with the frog. And I think I know what he meant, I just wish people would learn to be much more guarded with their words/topics/rants when online.
    Thanks for hopping by.

    #2018273

Syag> he threw it out there as an insult,

Syag, just re-read it loudly using softer tones and you will see that RebE thinks that Artscroll is not helping students in a long term. It is a reasoned opinion. It is OK to suspect someone who always asks annoying questions, but you need to dan Rebbe of CR l’tzad zhus!

Froggie: Do you use the Hebrew edition or the English edition? (I won’t ask if you use the French edition.)

P.S. So that we stay on topic here I must also ask you, are you a Yeshiva bochor?

    #2018322

    “ujm”

was the colour orange before the fruit orange

P.S. so we stay on topic yes I’m a yeshivah bochur

I am actually working on it to give the Daf Yomi learners another option being able to prepare themselves by using some computer programs as an aid.

It’s really just the beginnings of sentences that get me, I generally do capitalize names.
