I don’t know about 40 – but it definitely changes after 50. If you want to keep off the pounds on the same diet – you’ve got to get a gym membership or have some other serious exercise program. And cut back on the nosh. Eat because you’re hungry, not just because you’re sitting in front of the computer posting on the CR….

And it still might not work 🙁

Quit eating out so much. It has consequences for both men and women. A detailed description (of the result/s) is unnecessary and s’passt nisht on a Torah’dik site.

It does get tougher to lose and keep off weight but it is doable.

Ask your doctor, or check out your libary.

If you’re eating well and exercising, go to sleep knowing you’re doing your best.

Everything changes after 40, even your eyesight. Yes your metabolism slows down even after 30, then again after 40, and again after 50. You need to make adjustments to your diet and exercise routine.

if there are problems with the metabolism the family doctor will usually check your thyroid every 6 mnths.

eclipse; I don’t know whether I have the right or the wrong number, but –generally– “Overhang” and “Hangover” are not one and the same. You could get a hangover from excessive drinking of alcoholic beverages. And excessive eating (out), of fatty, high-Carbohydrate foods will get you overhang. For men, it’s mostly in the stomach. For women. C’est dans la derriere. (Compris.)

Started being mostly vegetarian, whole food, raw food, at 40. Just 2-4 kilo of extra weight on me, and a fine specimen of health, BH today on my 53rd BD by the lunar.

Thank you Amichai, its a day I take seriously, with a cheshbon nefesh and a taanis, but can’t deny the universal concept.

eclipse, what metro might be talking about is the worst kept secret in the food industry. The “holy trinity” (pardon the expression) of restaurant culture is FAT, SUGAR, and SALT. They generally don’t have anywhere near the same cares that the average health conscious individual has toward excess in the big three, not to mention the type of fats they use, and other commercial only products. It is sort of like focusing on looks only in shidduchim. As someone who frequented the back areas of some establishments, you wouldn’t want to eat the salad either ( hint: cleanliness and six legged things).

I think the big culprit of the 40-50 age slot is the fact that you ususally don’t have the time to take care of yourself as you did in your 20-30-40 slot (more kids, longer working hours, more stress, less time to exercise / eat right). Plus, the overall lifestyle (more simchas to attend, later nights, more driving) work against you

Making a meal at home takes time and focus. Buying take-out on the way home takes $40. Walking 3 miles takes about an hour and burns calories; driving 50 miles burns gasoline.

Convenience is a great thing. But it also takes a great toll.

    Twisted,metro was not being general.

Please re-read all 3 of his posts.

He seems to think I’m his neighbor/ex-wife/mother-in-law?

    What do you think?

Eclipse; (Lunar or Solar); I was speaking in general terms. I may have a neighbor or neighbors or family members who are on the heavy side but I don’t notice. My Mother-in-law is b’Gan Eden and those Einiklach named after her are all big girls, b”h. And I have only one wife for the past 38 Years, b”h. The only two things in life that are “Ex” in my life are cars and bosses. Now, to the main –and original– topic. In the later Thirties, the results of a slowing metabolism and eating the full menu in restaurants and on simchas is beginning to show. But drinking plenty of water (spring, filtered tap or carbonated are all the same.) is the best remedy to lose weight. When you do that, you don’t have to starve or count every calorie. Exercise. Including brisk walks are very effective in keeping weight under control and have additional health benefits.

The permanent “pregnancy” of many guys is not just fat. Sedentary/low activity lifestyle lend to poor muscle tone and the kishkes hanging out. That puts undo stress on the spine, and just having your midsection re-arranged from the original design cannot be too good. I lead an very physical life for parnassah, and I see that if you survive it, you don’t need to go to the gym, or have the doctor decree a walking regimen. It is sad to see that this is a common malady since “work” for most of us has ceased to be actual labor. For young guys that have any vanity to them, here in EY, we are starving for avodah ivrit in the building trades, and you can have a six pack ab along with the contribution to yishuv haaretz, and not sweat the occasional felafel or shwarma fat fest.
