Do you name your child after someone? I have heard people that use names based on circumstance – ex: Esther if the child was born on Purim.
I have a cousin that named her child a name that she and her husband chose. A name they like. For no other reason.
What do/did you do?
There is an old minhag to name from that weeks Parsha.
all of the above, plus named after tzaddik that died within the year my child was born.
i was named because that was just my father’s favorite name. some people just name their kids for whatever reason…
I was named because of my personality! JUST KIDDING. (I’m really a bitter, ugly sourpuss)

Keep in mind, one has ruach hakodesh when naming a child.

We named after people.
My oldest was born on Succos and has three names that all come from the names of the Ushpizin… but that was just a coincidence. He would have received the same names even if he wasn’t born on Succos.
While we named our kids after people, we have no theological problem with naming after an time period (i.e. born on Purim) or just picking a name because we like it.
