December 10, 2023 10:06 pm at 10:06 pm #2245783GadolhadorahParticipant“Shabbos Issues?”
Make sure your selection include a shabbos mode that allows you to open and close the refrigerator or freezer doors without activating interior lights, sounds, the compressor fan or other controls. While your fridge is in shabbos mode, water filter and icemaker status lights are disabled and temperatures cannot be adjusted.
Most important, don’t purchase on ShabbosDecember 10, 2023 10:32 pm at 10:32 pm #2245785Yabia OmerParticipantActivation of the compressor fan is a psik resheh de la nicha leh. No issue.
December 10, 2023 11:00 pm at 11:00 pm #2245787usa-tralianParticipantGE model with Shabbos Keeper add on.
December 11, 2023 2:34 am at 2:34 am #2245796funnyboneParticipantCan I leave it on shabbos mode all week? I don’t care for the lighting…
December 11, 2023 2:35 am at 2:35 am #2245797funnyboneParticipant1. Why isn’t it a psik reisha dnicha lei?
2. If it’s lo niche lei, can you rely on it or only Al yidei akum?December 11, 2023 12:03 pm at 12:03 pm #2245859nishtdayngesheftParticipantFunnybone, i think it also interacts with the compressor cycles as it relates to opening and closing. I believe they suggest not to leave on Shabbos mode long term. I think I did read somewhere that Shabbos mode turns off, at least on some models, after 3days.
December 11, 2023 12:04 pm at 12:04 pm #2245882MenoParticipantWhy is it a psik reisha at all?
December 12, 2023 1:15 pm at 1:15 pm #2246228ubiquitinParticipantFunnybone
1. Why isn’t it a psik reisha dnicha lei?
– OF course its nicha lei, You want the compressor to turn on when the fridge gets warm, thats how fridges work. If it doesnt do that you need a new fridge.
2. If it’s lo niche lei, can you rely on it or only Al yidei akum?
– No psik reisha delo nicha lei is not automatically mutarMeno is right on older fridges where it takes some time for compressor to go on, so not neccerarliy if you open fridge for short while would it trigger the compressor thus it wasnt a psik reisha.
Today though apparently there are all sort of monitor and sensors that are triggered ever tiem door opens, it isnt just the light/compressor.
As for keeping it in Shabbos mode all the time, the manuals all say that ruins the fridge which makes sense, these functions are there for a reason
December 12, 2023 2:18 pm at 2:18 pm #2246275DaMosheParticipantI second the idea of a GE model with the Shabbos keeper. I have this, and it is fantastic. You don’t have to remember to switch it to Shabbos mode each Friday, it does it on its own. It also adds on extras that some companies aren’t aware of, and may require people to rely on b’dieved situations – this was developed so you could use it l’chatchilah.
December 12, 2023 2:19 pm at 2:19 pm #2246277Reb EliezerParticipantBuy one with a Sabbath mode to be able to disable the LED lights.
December 13, 2023 1:32 am at 1:32 am #2246420Always_Ask_QuestionsParticipantbuy two: one for yomei chol with all features and one for shabbos, disable all lights and cut a side entrance to avoid triggering anything and anyone.
you can also use power fuse to the kitchen as a shabbos mode, powering off all devices you are zoche to own with one switch … fridge should keep at least some food edible if you dont open it too much.
December 13, 2023 1:33 am at 1:33 am #2246424Always_Ask_QuestionsParticipant> so you could use it l’chatchilah.
this is a great goal, but we have to be realistic and balance with conflicting goals. I read about someone asking a shaila of a rav and then expressing concern that the permitting psak is based on b’dieved considerations. The rav sighed, pointed to seforim in his bookshelves and said – all of these are also b’dieved (ie written v oral)
December 17, 2023 7:44 am at 7:44 am #2247349ChaimyParticipantI suggest a jewish owned business that sells refrigerators. I believe that they will give you good advice on your options.
December 17, 2023 5:26 pm at 5:26 pm #2247512GadolhadorahParticipantIn the alte heim, the truly affluent yidden may have had a metal storage chest style of “refrigerator” with a block of ice added every other day or two. Presumably, there was an analagous debate about whether it was ok to open the ice chest on shabbos since it arguably would accelerate the melting of the ice block. While it is generally agreed that if one allows the ice to melt into liquid on its own there is no concern, whereas there is presumably greater concern that by introducing warm air into the chest by opening the door one would directly be causing the ice block to melt faster.
December 17, 2023 10:06 pm at 10:06 pm #2247517☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantNo, GH, not analogous.
December 18, 2023 2:19 pm at 2:19 pm #2247741GadolhadorahParticipantDaas Yochid
I’m sure you are correct but could you explain why triggering melting by introducing warm air into the ice chest is not “analogous” to the malacha of triggering the compressor to operate by opening a refrigerator door absent a shabbos mode setting?December 18, 2023 8:36 pm at 8:36 pm #2247857Always_Ask_QuestionsParticipantHaving a fridge is showing lack of bitachon. Why are you stacking food. Surely, Hashem will provide for you tomorrow. Next, you will start stashing money into a pension fund instead of paying full tuition today. bitachon.
