It’s actually a big machlokes poskim as to whether copying music is allowed.
as for dinah d’malchusah, I was told it’s not an issue as long as you’re not downloading on a massive scale or selling what you’ve downloaded. The reasoning was that if you call a record company and tell them you downloaded their album, they’ll tell you not to do it again, and that’s all – they won’t try to come after you. If they won’t come after you, it’s not a problem of dinah d’malchusah.

If you don’t pay for it, you are stealing it. It is only meant for the use of the buyer! That is how the artist and producer makes their parnassah.

They specifically print on the package the music is protected by copyright laws, which expressly prohibits reproduction without permission. They may not go after me or you for a single song because of the expense involved, but they will go after a larger player (remember Napster?).

Same principle. Is my self-respect worth the $500 that Photoshop costs? When I ask that question, I still get the same answer.
And certainly, for a music CD that can be bought for $15…

The Indian fellow laughed his head off and said it could never happen in India. No Indian politician would bother with such a small bribe.
November 10, 2010 4:28 am at 4:28 am #708061WolfishMusingsParticipantI fail to see your point. Are you saying that it’s all right to steal because it’s not worth the owner’s while to come after me for such a small amount?
