Is making a vort necessary? I’ve heard of some in Queens who don’t bother with it. Is that true?
May 9, 2017 10:15 pm at 10:15 pm #1273318lesschumrasParticipantA vort is not necessary. Essentially it is an engagement party with a dvar Torah
May 9, 2017 10:22 pm at 10:22 pm #1273344SadigurarebbeParticipantIt is being phased out, I see people combining the l’chaim and the vort.
May 9, 2017 10:25 pm at 10:25 pm #1273348MenoParticipantThe reason they’re not doing vorts anymore in queens is because the street numbers are so confusing so no one ever shows up
May 10, 2017 9:36 am at 9:36 am #1273354zaltzvasserParticipantThat’s probably true, actually.
May 10, 2017 9:49 am at 9:49 am #1273392yehudayonaParticipantBoroughist!
May 10, 2017 9:49 am at 9:49 am #1273391MenoParticipantWhat will happen to Siegelman’s?

May 10, 2017 10:53 am at 10:53 am #1273517JosephParticipantWhy should both a l’chaim *and* vort *ever* be necessary?
May 10, 2017 11:09 am at 11:09 am #1273542LightbriteParticipantBecause of Siegelman’s
May 10, 2017 11:34 am at 11:34 am #1273557SadigurarebbeParticipantL’chaim is for the night they get engaged, after he proposes, and for immediate family only. So both sides can get to know each other. The vort is usually a week or two weeks later for the gantzeh velt.
May 10, 2017 11:52 am at 11:52 am #1273565☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantWhere is Queens? Is that a section of Boro Park?
May 10, 2017 12:42 pm at 12:42 pm #1273586JosephParticipantQueens County is the lesser half of Kings County.
May 10, 2017 12:42 pm at 12:42 pm #1273591chulinParticipantI’m from the boro park/ flatbush center of the universe, and all my friends and relatives did vorts. So it’s the first time I’m hearing of not doing it. Interesting.
May 10, 2017 1:16 pm at 1:16 pm #1273598👑RebYidd23ParticipantYou can have both by having the L’chaim at the same location as the vort half an hour before.
May 10, 2017 1:39 pm at 1:39 pm #1273628iacisrmmaParticipantDepends on what the families want. Personally we are happy to combine the two.
May 10, 2017 2:36 pm at 2:36 pm #1273646apushatayidParticipantSpeaking as a guest. I’m just as happy to show up once to say mazel tov. At the chuppa.
May 10, 2017 4:06 pm at 4:06 pm #1273679👑RebYidd23ParticipantIs the emoji in the title supposed to be antisemitic?
May 10, 2017 4:07 pm at 4:07 pm #1273700YW Moderator-💯ModeratorNo, why would you say that?
May 10, 2017 4:27 pm at 4:27 pm #1273704👑RebYidd23ParticipantIt’s an animal often used in racist comparisons.
May 10, 2017 5:22 pm at 5:22 pm #1273719YW Moderator-💯ModeratorI did not know that, and it is not supposed to mean that here.
May 10, 2017 10:22 pm at 10:22 pm #1273850LightbriteParticipantWhat’s the meaning of a boar by the vort?
May 11, 2017 12:20 am at 12:20 am #1273959LightbriteParticipantBoris Yeltsin was a Jew, may his memory be a blessing.
Dunno if he had an engagement party but he had a communist one.
Maybe the boar is a sign that it is better to have a vort 🎉 than a bort 🚹 (acronym for Boris Yeltsin and sounds like boar). But if you’re Boris Yeltsin’s mom then it is better to have both 🚹🎉.
Thank you and this concludes the first segment of the boar files. 🔚
May 11, 2017 12:20 am at 12:20 am #1273958Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantWhat’s Boro Park?
May 11, 2017 12:20 am at 12:20 am #1273957Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantlol. very true.
May 11, 2017 11:23 am at 11:23 am #1274163chulinParticipantI have no idea how that boar emoji got there. I’m typing from a laptop, I can’t even use emojis.
May 11, 2017 3:34 pm at 3:34 pm #1274319MenoParticipantVorts are boring
May 11, 2017 4:13 pm at 4:13 pm #1274332WinnieThePoohParticipantHe was? According to wikipedia, he was the first head of state in 113 years to be buried in a church ceremony.
May 11, 2017 6:19 pm at 6:19 pm #1274361LightbriteParticipantLooks like I was wrong WTP!
Wow. I Googled it but didn’t do a good enough job because it looks like he wasn’t as far as I know. He was supposedly good for Russian Jewry, or something.
Sorry! Well, there goes my rhyme.
May 15, 2017 10:20 pm at 10:20 pm #1276995yehudayonaParticipantThe proper emoji for a vort is a toad.
May 15, 2017 10:20 pm at 10:20 pm #1276992tobsParticipantBut the food is just awesome!
