We have an ancestor who came to the U.S. over a hundred years ago from Novardok (I think I have seen it spelled five different ways). Is there a way to find out what yeshivas there were then? Were they all part of the Mussar movement? Are there lists of rabbeim/talmidim anywhere? I really want to know more but no one in the family seems to know.

Did you go to Jewishgen.org? The website has a lot of information about the various shtetlach, including “yiskor booklets” on many of the shtetls. I downloaded an amazing biography of the town my Bubby was born in.

Wanderingchana; I’m just pointing out that one of the reasons you might have difficulty in finding information about Yeshivos and Jewish communities, especially in “The Lita”, (which is actually Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.) is, because we (The Yidden) call the towns and villages by completely different names that are listed on the maps. For example, Brisk is called Brest-Litovsk. And there are so many others.

EH: Thanks so much, I will definitely try jewishgen.org!

MD: Wikipedia has several different names for the town, and gives some info on the yeshivas there and the time periods, but it doesn’t have the specifics I’m hoping to find. (A website called “The Life of Wanderingchana’s Ancestor in Novardok” would be nice, LOL)

I’m willing to bet (without having tried it yet, this time around.) that if you “Google” the aforementioned sentence you will get about 2500 responses on each “Word”.
