My letter printed in one of today’s n.y. newspapers
Dear Editor:
When, not even if, Russia gets to keep part of the Ukraine, will that area be forever known as “occupied” Eastern Ukraine? Or is that nomenclature strictly reserved for liberated Judea and Samaria? Just wondering.
Yours
It ceases to be “occupied” when there is a peace treaty signed by both sides. The current treaty between Ukraine and Russia was signed in 1994 (and guaranteed by the United States and Britain). Once Israel signs a treaty with the Palestinians, the lands will no longer be disputed (or alternatively if the Palestinians give up their claims, accept the boundaries from the British mandate – and accept Israeli citizenship and around 40 seats in the Knesset).
A more optimistic example are Baltic countries – US did not recognize Soviet occupation from 1945 to 1990 – until it ended. And so did most of the population.
Also, Poles kept hopes for their state from 1790 to 1920.
