Don’t you think we should define “package” before making such a sweeping statement? One could argue that my closed tallis bag is a “package,” in which case, you’ve just condemned me to death for taking my tallis out of my bag this morning.

Why do I think that would make you proud?

October 30, 2011 1:55 am at 1:55 am #822184EnglishmanMemberThese factors may play a result in whether it is permitted or prohibited:
Is the package mail?
Is the package for a toy?
Is the package for food?
Is the package for utensils?
Is there wording that is being broken when opening the package?
October 30, 2011 2:24 am at 2:24 am #822185☕️coffee addictParticipantwhat’s wrong if you destroy the packaging
October 30, 2011 2:29 am at 2:29 am #822186OneOfManyParticipantRipping lettering is.
October 30, 2011 2:33 am at 2:33 am #822187☕️coffee addictParticipantI’m talking about destroying the packaging without ripping letters (I thought that was pashut)
October 30, 2011 2:59 am at 2:59 am #822188OneOfManyParticipantThat would be difficult if the packaging had lettering on it.
That aside, an act of complete ????? only solves the issue of??? ????? and/or ????.
???? and ???? would still be problems. (Depending on whether or not the thing is considered a ??? in the before opening…)
October 30, 2011 3:06 am at 3:06 am #822189EnglishmanMemberIf you receive a toy in the mail on Shabbos, you can open it assuming you won’t break any wording (lettering)?
