I was in Shop Rite and I saw plastic containers for sale. The package had an OU on it. However, it did not say OU-P. Do you think these containers are safe to use on Pesach?
March 11, 2013 12:44 pm at 12:44 pm #935987Is this a joke or serious? I’m having trouble figuring it out. I assume it’s a joke, but with today’s chumros it just might be serious.
March 11, 2013 1:27 pm at 1:27 pm #935988notasheepMemberwhen they started marketing plasticware and paperware as kosher l’pesach I think I despaired a little. plastic is plastic – you’re not going to eat it and unless the guy in the factory was eating a sandwich as he packed the containers for shipping, they have never seen a crumb in their life. it’s time to wake up!

March 11, 2013 3:54 pm at 3:54 pm #935990🐵 ⌨ GamanitParticipantnotasheep- they sometimes coat the plastics with oils and such. if you rinse it out soap and water before using it shouldn’t be a problem, but the kashrus issue isn’t that the workers will eat over the machines.
March 11, 2013 7:12 pm at 7:12 pm #935991notasheepMemberI was being facetious. I am well aware of the reason behind it and I think it is a step too far. Especially since oil is not chametz.
March 11, 2013 7:21 pm at 7:21 pm #935992🐵 ⌨ GamanitParticipantplastic tablecloths often contain starches that are genuine chametz. Perhaps the same is true for other plastics.
March 11, 2013 8:48 pm at 8:48 pm #935993notasheepMembercontain or are coated with? cause the prohibition on chametz is roeh l’achilas kelev. if the starch is part of the tablecloth itself then it really isn’t a problem – no dog would eat plastic.
March 11, 2013 9:08 pm at 9:08 pm #935994🐵 ⌨ GamanitParticipantcoated with, to keep it from sticking to itself. The kosher l’pesach tablecloths are much harder to open without tearing it.
March 12, 2013 8:38 am at 8:38 am #935995notasheepMembermy family always by the stiff PVC tablecloths brand new for pesach and then keep them till the next pesach. As far as I know, the PVC ones aren’t coated cause they are not disposable
March 12, 2013 12:49 pm at 12:49 pm #935996DaMosheParticipantI noticed yesterday that my aluminum foil has an OU on it also – not an OU-P. Is there a heimish brand of foil that’s kosher l’Pesach?
