anyone is with me??? i love to play by air and bh can figure out almost every song but i want to learn how to play by notes. The problem is thats much harder and the last time i tried having lesson the teacher gave me a tape and i just listened to the song a bunch of times till i knew it myself and figured it out!! any suggestions ? piano teachers in monsey/ spring valley?
March 25, 2012 11:57 pm at 11:57 pm #862807musicaldignityMemberi believe the expression is: play by Ear
March 25, 2012 11:58 pm at 11:58 pm #862808dash™ParticipantBuy sheet music for songs that you don’t know. BTW it’s ear, not air.
March 26, 2012 12:06 am at 12:06 am #862809ZeesKiteParticipantIt’s easier to play by air than by ear. One could hook up a piano to a mouthpiece and blow, it’s quite hard to play with one’s ear. I did try though.
March 26, 2012 12:13 am at 12:13 am #862810shlumpMemberi meant to write that it was a mistake! sorry! i was just wondering if there is anyone here who could play by EAR 🙂 ! and if they learned to play by notes
March 26, 2012 12:22 am at 12:22 am #862811wanderingchanaParticipantI’ve seen people play air guitar and air drums… no reaosn why you can’t play air piano!

i play air piano ALL the time. drives ppl crazy!!! i do it basically any time i’m listening to music (alone)
i took piano lessons for about a year by someone who wanted me to play classical-ie strictly by notes and i had no interest so i left. my basis of music is notes-and all the fancy lingo it comes with. after i left i played by ear.
basically, i taught myself to play by ear. i do use a book i got when i had lessons that i use for finding the minor keys and for the cadences.
until i started nursing school, i practiced alot. i havent touched a keyboard other than for typing since winter break 🙁
when i did play by ear i either first figured out the melody, then figured out the cords to go along. when i knew the cord order cold, i wrote it down-baruch hagever looked like this “C Am F G …” after that i would experiment with arpeggios along with cords or arpeggios with melody, would it work with a rhythm and cords etc.
if i found sheet music online, most of the work was done. i would play around with the cords till i found the sound i liked more.
this is (was) my technique but i think there are others in the CR who are more musically inclined than i am
March 26, 2012 1:10 am at 1:10 am #862813blablaParticipantI actually don’t know how to play with notes-no patience to learn it. whatever I play is by EAR 🙂
March 26, 2012 1:17 am at 1:17 am #862814shlumpMemberi know blaba me to but my mom is always wishing i could learn notes because than i can play nice chords.! i want to take lessons in the summer, just i hope i have the patience! i love the thrill of figuring it out yourself! as long as i know the song i can play it! 🙂 thank you hashem lol!
March 26, 2012 2:16 am at 2:16 am #862815writersoulParticipantI can play pretty well by ear but I have no clue how to do chords. I play the flute, where there aren’t any chords, so I have no motivation to learn.
March 26, 2012 2:31 am at 2:31 am #862816shlumpMemberwritersoul- i made a few up and basically stick to the same keys just on different octaves higher or lower. but u dont know the difference 🙂 i think im going to go play now! what piano do u ppl have? i have baldwin i think thats what its called
March 26, 2012 3:44 am at 3:44 am #862817blablaParticipantshlump-you sound like me! my mom always yelling at me that I should take lessons and learn cuz I could do so much….but zero patience and time!! maybe one day 🙂
March 26, 2012 5:24 am at 5:24 am #862818Think firstMemberWell I play by ear a bit, I can play a few chords. I actually composed a few songs on the piano too. However, I must tell you that a family member of mine has taken lessons and boy can she play! Its so worth it! Its beautiful when u can play the way its meant to be played. Go for it.
Alto music on rt 59 in suffern gives lessons.
March 26, 2012 2:29 pm at 2:29 pm #862819shlumpMemberik blalaba why should i have the patience for lessons? but really i have a wish one day to learn because what can u really do with music by ear? i wanted to play soooooo badly for my concert and after concert was over i was able to figure every single song, but inorder to know beats and everything u have to be able to read notes.
think first- alto music gives lesson? i never knew that what i really want though is a lady or girl who comes to your house or you go there. Do they have women teachers?
March 26, 2012 8:12 pm at 8:12 pm #862820bekitzurParticipantI play entirely by ear (oh, by the way, everyone who partook in the thread “Saxophone or Clarinet”, I chose saxophone!).
My brother plays at simchos, including weddings, and he can’t read notes either.
March 26, 2012 10:30 pm at 10:30 pm #862821Shticky GuyParticipantI play the flute, where there aren’t any chords
Dont tell me… you even play the flute by ‘air’…!!!! ☺
March 26, 2012 10:57 pm at 10:57 pm #862822writersoulParticipantShticky Guy: Yep… I’m just talented that way.
And DON’T do it by Alto Music! The teachers aren’t Jewish, which can be a problem for yamim tovim (though they’re great teachers) and the guy in charge REFUSES to reschedule lessons. It’s an enormous pain in the neck.
I speak from experience, though; I take flute lessons there and I have a great teacher, but the scheduling’s a mess.
March 26, 2012 11:13 pm at 11:13 pm #8628232scentsParticipantYes, I play flute by ear/air.
I can read notes, however I rarely do.
March 26, 2012 11:27 pm at 11:27 pm #862824oomisParticipantI play piano and guitar by ear, and there is nothing wrong with that. I took lessons since I was five, but found I was playing the pieces just by hearing the teacher play it first. I can still read music, and it is worth getting the lessons (and having a teacher who does not give you music tapes).
March 26, 2012 11:54 pm at 11:54 pm #862825MiddlePathParticipantI play guitar by ear. Though I know that reading notes can help in terms of playing live and in coordination with a band, I really don’t need to for myself. If there’s a piece I really want to learn and not spend the time to figure it out by ear, I’ll look up the chords or tablature. Every musical composition I’ve came up with has been completely by just putting pieces together that sound good in my head. So if you are just playing for yourself, I don’t see a need a to learn notes, unless you really want to and have the time.
March 27, 2012 6:35 pm at 6:35 pm #862826Shticky GuyParticipantI can blow my own trumpet. By air of course. I can also play the piano by ear. I even enjoy fiddling with my peyos…
March 27, 2012 8:31 pm at 8:31 pm #862827shlumpMemberlol shticky guy!!!! 🙂
March 28, 2012 9:39 am at 9:39 am #862828Shticky GuyParticipantThanks shlump. And mazeltov on your screenname!
