Does anyone have any helpful advice on what to do to deter possums? Someone told me moth balls. Do i spread them out? or is putting them in a bucket hanging higher up going to work too? Any other ideas?
October 7, 2013 4:50 pm at 4:50 pm #983346walton157Member@miritchka: One of the problems that I have noticed in Flatbush/Midwood is the lack of covers for the trash bins that are outside peoples’ homes. If I were a possum/racoon/squirrel I would definately come to F/M. Between the thrown out gefilte fish, chulent, kugel and other delicacies it’s a virtual feast.

They make special garbage bags which are infused with a peppermint smell, which I’ve been told are very effective at keeping animals away. You can also buy peppermint oil and soak some rags with it, then place them around your property.

What’s worse, once you take them away the smell does not go away. Peppermint, on the other hand, smells great! Hatzlacha!

October 9, 2013 3:28 pm at 3:28 pm #983350miritchkaMemberTorah613Torah: They are trespassing!! lol! All kiding aside, they are quite repelling animals and i dont like the idea of them in my childrens outdoor play area. Its not just possums, its racoons too! I’ve only seen one possum and a neighbor saw a racoon..thats more than enough…
Everyone else: Thank you!!!
October 9, 2013 4:15 pm at 4:15 pm #983351WIYMemberYou likely have a opposum problem not possum. The ones in America are opposums and different species than possums. Carry on.
October 10, 2013 3:05 pm at 3:05 pm #983352miritchkaMemberWIY: thanks for the clarification! so do you have any solutions?!
October 10, 2013 3:57 pm at 3:57 pm #983353golferParticipantMove to Australia.
That’s where possums live.
They have no opossums.
Or adopt a pet tiger. Much more attractive than an opossum and will take care of the problem in 1 evening.
October 10, 2013 5:58 pm at 5:58 pm #983354miritchkaMembergolfer: very convenient…but the move might not work out, can you send the tiger here?
October 10, 2013 8:24 pm at 8:24 pm #983355sharpMembermiritchka, Speak to an exterminator. Some do exterior work.
October 10, 2013 8:59 pm at 8:59 pm #983356akupermaParticipantPossums are an Australian animal that resemble the American Oppossums but a totally different species (though both are marsupials). The American ones can be a health pest (they apparently carry serious diseases that they are immune to but can spread, such as rabies), so I suggest calling a professional exterminator or local wildlife control agency.
October 22, 2013 3:20 pm at 3:20 pm #983357miritchkaMemberThank you!
Sharp: i actually just saw an ad for an exterminator that services problems with racoons, squirrels, and oppossums/possums.
October 23, 2013 1:48 am at 1:48 am #983358sharpMembermiritchka, tell them to take the opossum far, far away.
Hope it works out.
October 23, 2013 11:31 am at 11:31 am #983359eclipseMemberDouble your garbage bags, or use heavy-duty black ones.
October 23, 2013 4:26 pm at 4:26 pm #983360yehudayonaParticipantLet me get this straight. Possums are Australian. Opossums are American. What do the Irish have? O’Possums?
October 28, 2013 8:19 am at 8:19 am #983361👑RebYidd23ParticipantThere is a different animal named possum, but opossums are also called possums in the hope that they’ll believe it and move to Australia.
October 28, 2013 4:20 pm at 4:20 pm #983362WIYMemberOh-possum can you see?
