Is there any hetar to dress up as a girl/boy on Purim? How about other controversial costumes? ( costumes from movies, Arabs, singers)
February 29, 2012 6:37 pm at 6:37 pm #856625Sam2ParticipantWhy should Purim be Mattir an Issur D’oraisa of Beged Ish/Ishah?
February 29, 2012 7:36 pm at 7:36 pm #856626ToiParticipantIts muttar if its a troll.
February 29, 2012 8:54 pm at 8:54 pm #856627zahavasdadParticipantActually I think I saw somewhere it was muttar or at least Not-Forbidden
It definatly has been debated and the answer is not as clear cut as you think
February 29, 2012 8:59 pm at 8:59 pm #856628coreytothecupMemberWell there is a mitzvah to drink on Purim, but the rest of the year the klal dosent feel the same?? so seems that Purim is more lenient in some circumstances maybe by costumes is the same?

February 29, 2012 9:18 pm at 9:18 pm #856631apushatayidParticipantI was a troll last year. This year, I will be one of the three billy goats gruff. Not sure which one.
February 29, 2012 9:19 pm at 9:19 pm #856632yungerman1ParticipantSam2- Because the Rema says it is.
That said, the Mishna Berura is of the opinion that we should abolish this minhag, and perhaps if it is only one garment and the gender is clear we shouldnt protest. (read: we shouldnt burn garbage cans, throw rocks, or pour bleach on them.)
February 29, 2012 9:41 pm at 9:41 pm #856633nitpickerParticipantdifference between 1) muttar and 2) not-forbidden?
February 29, 2012 10:53 pm at 10:53 pm #856634NechomahParticipantI dressed up my 2yo daughter like a boy. She wasn’t so happy to be wearing pants, but it was really cute and we have great pictures from it. We wouldn’t do it after age 3.

Letter of the law vs spirit of the law.
March 1, 2012 1:35 am at 1:35 am #856637writersoulParticipantMy brother was a girl last year (as I mentioned in another thread). He was nine. At above bar mitzvah he wouldn’t be allowed to do it (if he actually wanted to, that is…)
My dad’s friend was an Arab.
Personally, those are not the weirdest costumes I’ve ever heard of.
March 1, 2012 7:28 am at 7:28 am #856638ToiParticipantas an aside, my father dressed up one year as a woman. He wore a dress with a shaitel and put a pillow by his stomache. And he had a rather large moustache.
