Is being quiet the same or different as being shy? I read all these social anxiety self-help thingamajigs and I have so many of the characteristics but I’m not shy (scared of people) at all: I’d just rather be alone.

Is shyness and quietness the same thing?

Also I notice that stores like Pomegranate offer hand sanitizers

FWIW, IMHO, shy people tend to be quiet. However, not all quiet people are shy.

Wolf, what does that have to do with hand sanitizers in Pomegranate? 😉

I’m quiet and I don’t find it easy initiating conversations with people I don’t know. (One of the reasons I like the CR is that it isn’t face-to-face). I also prefer spending time alone, rather than in crowds. I wouldn’t call myself shy, though.

Wolf: I don’t think non-usage of hand sanitisers is any indication of shyness.

I’m usually considered a quiet person. I am not afraid of people, but I still am shy.

I’m sorry… I obviously still had the text from the other thread on my clipboard when I pasted. My apologies.

    HaLeiVi:

A quiet person doesn’t make noise?

MII: I think we can safely assume that the first part of Wolf’s comment was an erroneous copy/paste

Eclipse: What does that mean, “they’re smart because they listen more than they talk”?

it is better social skills to listen more than talk. If you would read Dale Carnegies book How To Make Friends and Influence People, you will see this is a very common thread in there. Like he says no one is really interested in what you have to say they are interested in what they have to say. So if you listen to others with real interest you will make them like you. And of course if you listen to other people you will learn alot more than if you spend all your time talking- in which case you will not learn anything at all. So quiet people can often seem alot smarter than other people because they know so much more.
