The following was submitted to YWN by a resident of Topeka where the retards from the Westboro Baptist Church live:

“I live in Topeka, KS and the Phelps have been a blight and embarrassment for nearly all the 50 plus years I have lived here. Please note that many, many people have tried to reason with these psychopaths to no avail. The patriarch was (is) a pathetic, raging lunatic who beat his wife and 13 children senseless over the last 60 years and they hate EVERYBODY. They will do any perverted thing to gain attention. Please note they dont represent Kansas, Christians, God, Baptists (I imagine) or any other group or philosophy that is rooted in logic or reason (anything other than hatred). I am praying for shalom for you all and a speedy recovery from this trauma. Shalom.”

    Y.W. Editor-

Thanks for posting that, I didn’t think they had any followers other than themselves.

Also I’m sure you weren’t trying to hurt anyone but I’ve heard that parents of special children take serious offence at the “r” word being used to describe others. Would you be able to choose a different word?

That’s the second such letter to YW. Another gentile posted directly to the CR a few days ago.

Thank you Dr.Pepper… As a father of two “special needs” children (high functioning autism, SPD), I can say that I would certainly take offense to people with “special needs” being referred to as “retards”. However, contextually, it doesn’t bother me, especially when talking about this group. I can’t speak for everyone, but I know that “retarded” is a slang term and is usually only used as such.

Mostly off topic but it always makes me laugh, I remember a few years ago a local catholic men’s club, the “knights of columbus”, were collecting money with change jars that had printed really big on them “Money for the Retards”. I have NO idea how that made it on the jars without someone suggesting a change. The following year it was worded a lot more “PC”.

I believe retarded was once upon a time the term used for what is today referred to as special children, and it was not an insulting term at the time.

@BenTorah – you’re right, but it changed over the years, just like how you used to call “little people”, “midgets” or “inuits”, “eskimos”… I’m not huge on being politically correct for the sake of being politically correct but if it offends people I try to stay away from those terms.

Would it have been better or worse if he had said, “the special needs people from the Westboro Baptist Church”

Say what you want about the Phelps family, but consider this. The Baptist church that the Phelps family claims to be a part of has a multi million dollar budget earmarked for missionizing to jews. The Baptist church and the Pheps family have the same agenda, the Phelps family unintentionally allows the Baptist church to fly under the radar. They provide money and manpower to groups like Jews for J. Yes, the Phelps family deserves all the invective heaped upon them, but let’s not lose sight over the spiritual harm the church umbrella they belong to is trying to perpetuate.

They remind me of Palestinians. Scream, scream, scream, threaten, threaten, whine, but when someone gets back in their face (with the attention they want), they get all indignant and surly (-ier). That’s some serious hate Phelps has been dishing out to his own family a la Arabs keeping their own people oppressed and angry against some perceived/fabricated outside “enemy”. Mamish.

Popa – remember the OP is a YW editor and I think that we should be able to expect a higher caliber of wordsmithing from him/her. If he couldn’t come up with a better word, he could have consulted a thesaurus. Parents of special needs children shouldn’t have to read an article here that puts their beloved children in the same category as those miscreants that the article is about. Shabbat Shalom.
