I wish my high school experience was a better one. I went to what’s considered a really wonderful frum school, and my teachers were great, but I was pretty much not stimulated or inspired. I have a dream to open a frum girl’s high school where girls like me, who are smart and very creative, can learn Torah through the arts (with the student base mostly being girls who would attend Bais Yaakov schools.)I’m really interested in your ideas or opinions about this.

Explain please. How does one teach Torah through the arts? It sounds like you want to make preschool projects with teenagers.

You could probably do that for certain classes to demonstrate certain points, like have a typical chumash class and then when learning about sefer shmuel, for the test, the girls would have to build their own replica of the ark that held the ten commandments in it and then be assessed on what parts are there/ missing.

snowbunny3318, nice ideas! DaasYochid, there’s a reason why they teach preschoolers through art: It works. They internalize it much better than simply being told the information. That doesn’t change as people grow older.

little miss: I am a very artistic person, and I always wished that my high school had offered more in the way of art – but I don’t think what you are describing would be a good idea. Extensively hands-on teaching works for pre-school classes, because the ideas being transmitted are simple and generally easily represented with pictures, etc. In higher grades, the ideas can be much more complex and abstract, and needs to be taught in a formal, straightforward fashion.

However, artistic ability lets you harness another powerful learning tool – visual processing. In school, I always took notes in a very visually structured format, and used diagrams instead of words whenever I could. This was actually crucial for me, because I always found that I could only really understand a concept when I could mentally visualize its structure. I feel that this is the best avenue toward harnessing each student’s individual talents – not trying to transplant them into the classroom, but trying to configure them so as to best adapt to mainstream higher level teaching (lecture/dictation).

OneOfMany, very good point. That’s exactly what I was struggling with-how to bring the arts even into the more complex subjects. From what you’re saying, it would be a good idea to help the students learn what their ideal learning/studying method is, so that when the classes cannot be based in creativity, they can still learn well. That’s important in general too, because even if I open a school and use creative teaching methods, the girls will probably go on to seminary and college.

I am in a very unique seminary program, so I am being exposed to a variety of different teaching methods. But also, you could have different types of Halacha, such as medical halacha, computer arts classes, where you teach the girls how to use photoshop, which can be vital in order to get a parnossa as a graphic designer…

Really?! What’s it’s full name? (there are many Bais Yaakov schools in Brooklyn). Maybe I could meet some of the staff or see the curriculum. I’d love to find out more!
