is there a problem with a single girl wearing a ring on her left ring finger? i have always worn rings on my left hand because i’m a righty and rings on my right hand annoy me when i’m writing. i was speaking with a friend recently and she mentioned the left is for the wedding band. i always knew that but is there a problem if i wear a ring there when i’m single?

It might look weird but I don’t know what problem that would be.

Nothing halachicly incorrect in this matter as far as I’m concerned.. It’s just more or less become an accepted practice within the jewish relm as well as outside. As wearing a ring on the left is a symbol stating that your “taken”. It sort of like forks on the left, knives on the right type of thing..

The index finger is the true placement for a wedding ring.

Sam2 what looks weird about it?

Personally if the goyim in my class think I’m taken I really could not care less and the frum people I don’t think will care cuz it’s a light blue stone.

I don’t see the problem with wearing a ring on your left hand if you are single. Unless it looks like a diamond or a wedding band.

Cutlery is set according to which hand it will be used by.

so i was wearing my ring (light blue stone) in class and during break, a (sephardi) guy sitting in front of me asked me if i was engaged because he know’s i’m single but wearing a ring on my L ring finger. so i told him still single. he asked why i was wearing it on the ‘wrong’ hand so i explained why it was on my left. he wasnt too convinced with that answer

He may have thought you were trying to, umm, ingratiate yourself with him.

No problem whatsoever. I always wore rings on whichever hand was more comfortable when I was single. When I got married, my wedding band replaced the engagement ring, and the engagement ring goes on the right hand now (when I decide to wear it). Only a diamond is assumed to be an engagement ring on the left hand. Though technically someone might choose to wear another type of ring to mark the engagement (a la Princess Di’s emerald), most often it is a diamond and anything else is thought to be just a decorative ring.

Hence, my comment that it might look a little weird. 🙂 Not that it matters though. There’s nothing wrong with looking a little weird.
