What’s the root of the first word of Bereishis 6:11, vatishacheis?

Both Artscroll and Kehot translate it as “had become corrupt”.

    @Reb Eliezer
Thanks. I thought I had looked for that one earlier in BDB and Jastrow. In any case, it’s there now.

How can it be a piel?

It would then be active voice not passive.

Here it is passive voice, the earth was corrupted.

Try a different binyan adei ad?

Did not know people use BDB who were not from unzere.

    Jastrow, nu , mayleh.

Benephraim, you are right this is passive, a nifal where the vov converts the future tense to past.

What are the alternatives to BDB and Jastrow? (for a BT without formal Jewish education)

    According to Rashi:

ותשחת [THE EARTH] WAS CORRUPT — It means lewdness and idolatry, as (Deuteronomy 4:16) פן תשחיתון “lest ye deal corruptly” (the following words show that this refers to idolatry) and as ‘כי השחית כל בשר וגו “for all flesh had corrupted etc.” (in next verse of this chapter where Rashi states that this has reference to lewdness) (Sanhedrin 57a).

I looked at Analytical Hebrew and Cbaldee Lexicon by Benjamin Davidson which enumerates all hebrew and aramaic words in Tenach (not unzere)ו

Reb Dovid, do you know the shoresh of Dovid and it’s meaning?

Secondly, the piel form of sh-ch-s is used in reference to Hashem Yisborach. The niphal is used for the land and the hiphil is used for the people.

Contrast this with healing where the doctor is piel and Hashem is Kal sometimes with and sometimes without a dagesh,?

    Capesci?

The niphal root is shochas, to be corrupted.

The Rabbenu Bachaya explains the difference between a doctor where it says verapah yerapeh with a ‘peh’ heavy, whereas by Hashem it says rofecha with a ‘feh’ light. Hashem’s cure is light but a doctor’s
is hard. By a doctor there is a double expression whereas by Hashem a single one. A doctor leaves side effects requiring to go back to heal. I also heard that we should seek a second opinion which are by Hashem unnecessary.
