Is there any sort of logic behind the order of the mefarshim in the back of the gemara? I use oz ve’hadar gemaras and it’s always the rosh before the maharsha before the ran with varying mefarshim in between. Is it the same in all gemaras? How is it organized?

I think the Ran was an add on with the Rif. Many gemoras don’t have it. The Rosh is earlier in time than the Maharsha. The Maharsha is primarily on Tosfas or Agodas of the gemora complicated to learn because of its conciseness. The other meforshim came later in time. When it comes to halacha, when two of the three, Rif, Rambam and Rosh agree, Rav Yosef Karo, the mechaber of the Shulchan Aruch, paskens like them. The Rosh escaped to Spain, so the sefardim accept him also.

I am pretty sure it goes by chronology.

Wow! The level of familiarity with what goes on in a gemara.

According to Rav Ovadia Yosef in his intro to his comments onof Halichoy Plan on the Ben Ish Chai, the reason why Rav Yosef Caro chose those 3 is because they rendered halachic psak, whereas other commentaries on Shas were no necessarily deciding ha

Look at the Yechaveh Daas at the end of the 5th chelek as he discusses how psak halacha is derived.

    Dear YWN,
I think it is in order of when they were added to the gemara tome. each one used to be printed separately. As bindings improved, more mefarshim were added.
