February 22, 2013 1:42 am at 1:42 am #932072tro11MemberIf you know how to play chords on guitar playing chords on piano is very easy. And the keys are in order so playing melody is easy too. That’s how I learned how to play piano.
February 22, 2013 1:45 am at 1:45 am #932073HaLeiViParticipantI know of a great teacher for self taught piano.
February 22, 2013 2:55 am at 2:55 am #932074Torah613TorahParticipantMy siblings taught themselves (I took lessons.) They only took lessons after they could play by ear, to improve their playing skills. They are much better at piano than I am, I never graduated year 4. So starting with lessons doesn’t always work out for the best anyway.
Just get yourself an easy book. If you practice an hour a day, and that means every single day, it should take about a year to become good enough to play easy pieces.
Also, fingering is really important. Don’t get into lazy fingering habits in the beginning, or you’ll just have to relearn fingering later on.

February 22, 2013 9:01 am at 9:01 am #932077YW Moderator-42ModeratorSome people have a natural musical talent and can teach themselves without ever pick’ing up a book or taking lessons. For others it is harder.
February 22, 2013 11:11 am at 11:11 am #932078haifagirlParticipantYou should start out with at least a few lessons. If you teach yourself you might not get the proper technique. It is much easier to learn it properly from the beginning than have to unlearn a bad happen and replace it with a good one.
February 22, 2013 4:44 pm at 4:44 pm #932079Torah613TorahParticipantTPO: fingering is putting the right finger on the right key. Most early books put numbers on top of each note to tell you which finger should go on that key. Often, it seems easier to just use one finger, since it takes longer to learn with the proper fingers. But in the long run, you will have to completely re-learn your habits in order to play harder, and ultimately more rewarding, pieces of music.
