So we’re sitting at the yontiff table, and someone mentions how eating chocolate releases serotonin.
I said, “Big deal, so do SSRI’s.”
Right?
October 24, 2011 2:40 am at 2:40 am #819510yossi z.Memberwhat’s SSRI’s?
October 24, 2011 2:43 am at 2:43 am #819511taking a breakMemberSSRI’s inhibit the reuptake of seretonin. They don’t release or produce seretonin, they just enhance the effect of endogenous seretonin

October 24, 2011 2:51 am at 2:51 am #819513popa_bar_abbaParticipantSSRI’s inhibit the reuptake of seretonin. They don’t release or produce seretonin, they just enhance the effect of endogenous seretonin
MAOI’s?
October 24, 2011 2:54 am at 2:54 am #819514taking a breakMemberMonoamine oxidase inhibitors (or s/t like that). MAOI’s inhibit the degredation of different hormones. They don’t produce them either
October 24, 2011 2:55 am at 2:55 am #819515JotharMemberChocolate is much cheaper than SSRI’s, unless you have a sweet Rx plan.
October 24, 2011 3:02 am at 3:02 am #819516popa_bar_abbaParticipantYes yes, whatever. I don’t care how it works. The point is still true.
October 24, 2011 3:08 am at 3:08 am #819517HealthParticipanttaking a break – What? Are you in nursing school?
Sounds like you’re taking Pharm 101.
October 24, 2011 3:08 am at 3:08 am #819518taking a breakMemberNo it not. There is a big difference between releasing ( as chocolate does) and inhibiting reuptake ( such as SSRI’s and MAOI’s).

There is a big difference in how it works, but not in relevant effect. If you are trying to create artificial happiness, it is not less artificial because you happened to use a household food item, than a household toiletry, than a household liquor, than a household drug.
October 24, 2011 3:11 am at 3:11 am #819520taking a breakMemberSorry. Not telling you what I’m studying. But it’s in the medical field.
OK OK I concede. The effect is similar you forgot to mention the health benefits of chocolate and the potential SE of those drugs. I’d take chocolate if you’re offering 🙂

By me – it’s like – goes straight into the opiate receptors.
