Why are people makpid to say Shabbos instead of Saturday and Motzei Shabbos instead of Saturday night but not Leil Shabos instead of Friday night and Erev Shabbos instead of Friday?

April 4, 2012 1:58 pm at 1:58 pm #865957shmoelMemberWho isn’t makpid to say Erev Shabbos or Leil Shabbos? Almost everyone I know is and does.

I don’t think I know more than one person who calls Friday night Leil Shabbos, though.

If I told my boss that I would check my email or run a stored procedure on Motzei Shabbos, she would have no idea what I was talking about.

Sometimes I have to though if there’s no other way to explain what I’m trying to say. I haven’t found myself any Limud Z’chus yet other than the fact that since almost everyone does it, it must not actually be Assur.
April 5, 2012 2:09 am at 2:09 am #865963147ParticipantYour question Simcha613 is very well founded & taken.
To me Shabbos nite is from sunset/nitefall on a Friday until Alos haShachar on a Saturday morning. REason:- Because this is the nite as abstain from Melocho, as per the 4th commandment in the Torah.
Saturday nite thru Sunday morning, by definition is Leil Rishon, or Motzei Shabbos, but certainly is not Shabbos nite, because on that nite I perform Melocho all the way from lighting & extinguishing a Havdolo candle + a lot more.
Even this Saturday nite I shall be performing Melocho when I light my Yaknehaz lite, and then Saturday nite 7 weeks later, I shall also be performing Melocho, when I light my Yaknehaz lite & then carry my Tikkun Leil Shovu’os on Broadway [A Reshus hoRabim miDeOraisso] to Shul.
