I had a new light fixture put in about a half a year ago. Recently, it started causing problems:

When I turn it on, it flickers on and then off.

If I try again, nothing happens.

If I wait a few seconds and retry, it turns on immediately. For a while, it will turn on as it should, but then I have to restart the procedure. It’s a laborious way of turning on a light.

It has an electronic starter, apparently. It’s probably the electronics and the whole thing needs to be replaced, but can anyone tell me why it happens?

    ICOT, or anyone else?

My experience and knowledge are for U.S. fixtures and voltages, but I think we can reasonably assume that the principles work the same elsewhere.

The problem can be with a bulb, the ballast (a transformer used by fluorescent fixtures), or (much less likely) a loose connection.

Since bulbs are much easier and cheaper to replace than ballasts are, the first thing to do is change the bulb(s) and replace them with bulb(s) that you know are working.

The bulb isn’t a standard shape, so I haven’t checked with a second one. Though from the regularity of the problem, I imagine it isn’t that.

I’ll talk to my electrician next time he comes about the ballast. It may just be cheaper for me to change the whole thing.

    Thanks for the info.

To prevent my missing electric-related questions, please post them on the following thread:
