The Rav Malbim explains the difference between vayosuru and vayraglu. Moshe Rabbenu sent spies to determine the preference of each shevat what land is good for them but they switched their mission to find what is wrong, vayraglu They were suppose to return their findings to the general and not publicize it as indicated by shelach lecha. take ownership of it, explained by Rav Abarbanel and the Maasei Hashem. Even if they told the truth, the emphasis in their report was disparaging by nullifying the preceeded good, leaving at the end a bad taste behind.
So, why did everyone else cried when they were given an opportunity to stay in the yeshiva of Moshe Rabbeinu for their whole life?! On full support! Would our generation cry or be happy?
On Bamidbar 13:20 “whether there are trees or not”, the Chiddushei HaRim says that the “trees” refer to the Eitz HaChaim- the tree of life.
Moshe Rabbeinu send out the meraglim to “feel” if the environment of Eretz Yisrael was enriched by Torah.
The Gemara in Bava Basra says that the air in Eretz Yisroel makes a person wise. The Sfas Emes however, in parashas Shelach, says that the wisdom of Torah in the air of Eretz Yisroel was temporarly concealed because the Canaanites still lived in the land. The wisdom in the air had a “husk” on it.
So why would the meraglim need to feel if the Torah was in the environment of the land of Israel and if they felt the wisdom of Torah in the air?
