I recently got shingles (herpes zoster), boruch Hashem a relatively mild case but still bothersome. After about a week I had the idea that if I davened for other Jews suffering from the same thing maybe Hashem will help me more. I checked it out with my Rav and he said it was a very good idea and I didn’t even have to mention the names of the other people, just ask Hashem to cure everyone who has shingles. So I started doing that a very soon noticed a significant improvement. L’chora this applies to all other diseases and conditions so I submit it to the olam l’tovas harabim. May all Yidden be cured of all diseases and all unpleasant conditions.

Por -“I recently got shingles (herpes zoster), ”

The best thing for Shingles is Not to get it!
There are 2 different types of vaccines.
I just got my Second dose & it’s the Last one.

Did you not have chicken pox as a child? That usually prevents shingles in adults

    @Reb Eliezer
I believe I heard somewhere that if one is davening for others with intention of getting answered first, that it doesn’t work. The individual needs to actually sincerely be davening for others. Not sure if I’m correct, though. Even if I am correct, I don’t know the level of lishmah you need to be either.
NOTE: I’m NOT saying por didn’t do that at all, I was just making a general clarification.

As my own idea, malochim don’t know what is in the mind of people, so Hashem as part of his mercy, allows them to listen to the prayer and they will bring the above statement to fruition.

@crackers – getting chicken Pox is a precursor for getting shingles (it is the same virus that stays latent in the body). Shingles is a very common illness in older people with weakened immune systems. This is why getting the vaccine for Chicken Pox is important as it both prevents Chicken Pox and Shingles.

    You got it backwards!
When you had Chicken Pox during childhood – you have a possibility of getting Shingles as an Adult.

Shingles is a serious, painful disease. Daven all you want, but get sound medical advice and help, before you get the disease.

It says כל המחלה אשר שמתי במצרים לא אשים עליך כי אני ה’ רפאך, all illness which are placed on Mitzraim I will not place on you because I am Hashem your healer. We see that Hashem is the Healer before the illness has arrived. By the doctor, healer is referred to by a ‘peh’ as yerapoh yerapeh whereas by Hashem by an ‘feh’ rofecha. The Rabbenu Bachaya explains that a doctor’s cure is hard whereas Hashem’s is light. The doctor has a double expression, requiring to return to cure the side affects or get a second opinion, which by Hashem is not required.

I had chicken pox at 6 weeks old (my older siblings had it when I was brought home from the hospital) and voila 6 weeks later I had it. Good thing, a child that young can’t scratch.

65 Years later I had shingles
Both my older siblings had shingles in their 60s
Mrs. CTL had chicken pox at age 4, she currently is suffering with shingles. Unfortunately the standard medication is contraindicated for he, so she suffers.

Sorry I would like to clarify, when one has chicken pox it can stay in the body for many years and one can have shingles many years down the line. However if as an adult you are exposed to children that are having chicken pox (and you had it as a child) you boost your immunity for not getting shingles. That is why in UK they don’t give the vaccine, BC people won’t be exposed to kids having chicken pox and there is a rise in shingles in adults.

Crackers -“That is why in UK they don’t give the vaccine, BC people won’t be exposed to kids having chicken pox and there is a rise in shingles in adults.”

I honestly don’t know what you are talking about!
They give the vaccine Zorivax, but not Shingrex.
    Maybe Shingrex is too expensive?
That’s what happens with Socialized Medicine!

    From NHS.UK Website:
“A vaccine to prevent shingles, a common, painful skin disease is available on the NHS to people in their 70s.
The shingles vaccine is given as a single injection into the upper arm. Unlike the flu jab, you’ll only need to have the vaccination once and you can have it at any time of the year.
The shingles vaccine is expected to reduce your risk of getting shingles. If you do go on to have the disease, your symptoms may be milder and the illness shorter.
Shingles can be very painful and uncomfortable. Some people are left with pain lasting for years after the initial rash has healed. Shingles is also fatal for around 1 in 1,000 over-70s who develop it.”

“I believe I heard somewhere that if one is davening for others with intention of getting answered first, that it doesn’t work.”

People don’t understand why it should work, so they say it doesn’t work. Nevertheless, things in the spiritual realm do not necessarily have to be understood by us mortals.

It works because it says it works. It does not say anywhere it has to be lishma. (except by people who think their logic determines if it works.)

Thanks to everyone who answered my original post. In response to various points: I did have chicken pox around 65 years ago. When I asked my Rav he certainly understood that I would be davening for others in the hope of getting answered for myself, and he still thought it was a good idea. I’ll daven for Mrs. CTL, may things go easy for her. I’ve been saying the possuk with כי אני השם רופאך three times every morning (with targum), it didn’t stop me from getting it but may have helped in terms of keeping my case relatively light, bli ayin horo. Another important tefilla is from the Sefer Shomer Emunim:

Puriya cream & calmoseptine, are supposed to be good. MY BIL got relief smearing Aveeno anti-itch lotion on forehead (beige bottle & navyblue lid).
Also – apply aloe vera & cold-wet cloths. And alternate with oatmeal or naphtha soap.

Also mild diet, cutting citrus, spices, spices, sodium, alcohol, dehydrating environment, bright lights.

I once had the worst possible case of poison ivy, which causes similar symptoms, so i can relate. What had offered me some relief were Calamine, aveeno-lotion, cool baths & naphtha soap.
