I was recently in the shop-rite on McDonald Ave in Brooklyn, and noticed by the checkout counter that they covered up the magazines with a permanent cover. They place the magazines in back of the cover with just the top of the magazine sticking out.

August 29, 2012 11:36 am at 11:36 am #894107WhiteberryMemberShopr Rite cares about your business, not the torahs demands of modesty. But, at least they value the business enough to give in and cover the offending magazines.
August 29, 2012 8:06 pm at 8:06 pm #894108cherrybimParticipantThe frum Jewish community owes a huge hakaras hatov to ShopRite for servicing us with a vast amount of products with kosher hashgacha including fish, meats, poultry and even sushi. When treif turkeys are put on special during the season, ShopRite will offer kosher turkeys at large discounts; and many more examples.
Even though ShopRite cares about your business; it is still incumbent for us to be appreciative.
And don’t forget to pick up your free Jewish calendar for the New Year at ShopRite.

August 29, 2012 8:23 pm at 8:23 pm #894110morning19Participantthey cover it up so that people should not read them before buying, not everything in the world is done for you
August 29, 2012 8:41 pm at 8:41 pm #894111icedMemberPeople can still read them before buying. And as far as seeing just the front page, the cover is designed (unfortunately) to be seen by everyone in order to sell based on salacious cover stories.
So it seems it was in fact covered for modesty reasons.

So what annoys you, the fact that you cant read the shmutz anymore without paying for it first? Or that some Jews actually care about what they look at? Or does both annoy you?
August 30, 2012 12:32 am at 12:32 am #894113morning19Participantthe only thing that annoys me is the fact that you think everthing was done for you. I have no interest in looking at those magazines anyway
August 30, 2012 1:43 pm at 1:43 pm #894114americaisoverParticipantit is good that Shoprite is around otherwise the “heimish” stores would have a monopoly.

True, in small off the beaten path orthodox communities like Boro Park and Flatbush, there are no other source for the commodities listed, and the ability for the few orthodox inhabitants of these areas to easily obtain these items makes life immesurabely more enjoyable.
