What happened was ,is that we were able to learn torah after the battle was won and instead of learning the schools give vacation. I think vacation should be given after channukah!

    Dov,

That’s a fair argument. Present it to the school heads. If they don’t like it, you’re always free to start a school with no Channukah vacation.

I’ve heard Gedolim lament that Yeshivos give the bochorim off on Chol Hamoed.

Really, now that children are not needed at home for the harvest and gather seasons, and we have air-conditioning in the classrooms, there is no reason for children to have off from school at all. We used to go to school even on Shabbos (no pens, pencils, etc. Just learning). Good luck.

For many frum families, Shabbos Chanukah is a time for getting together with relatives, time to visit bobby and zeidy. So they give off a friday and sunday so you can go away for a shabbos. What a wonderful thing! Who says learning can only be done in school, how about learning with abba or grandpa? geshmack, plus doing a mitzvah of kibbud av vaim!

In theory, I agree with OP.

In a year like this one, though, it works great because parents and older children who work in non-Jewish environments have time off anyway, and can spend quality time with the whole family. (when the dates don’t coincide this would not work, because how would it sound to give the kids xmas vacation?!)

To Joseph and Squeak, you have obviously never been children or teachers. The school year, especially the winter, are a VERY long stretch and people really need a break. If yeshivas had shorter days and/or more recreational activities, vacation might not be necessary.
