No, they should dress like Jews have since the time of Avraham Avinu, in the garb of 18th Century Polish Nobility.

No blue shirts or gary hats CVS. Only tight pants and the top shirt button open!

im in favor of removing the black suit. a white shirt and dress pants (and hat) are enough.

The custom of dressing in style started with Slabodka. It aligned with their hashkafa of galus haadam and was also meant to raise the status of yeshiva bachurim, who were seen by most people as bench kvetchers and leeches who were not willing to work. It did come with a risk of gaavah and an overemphasis on materialism. In Europe, when everyone, especially the yeshivah bachurim were dirt poor that was a low-level risk.

Today, the Chareidi society looks at you as a low-life if you are NOT in yeshiva. Considering the high level of materialism today, it would seem that it is time to scale back the emphasis on style as it does not support any good middos and only helps the bad ones

Rocky, I think the main reason for low self esteem for bochrim that they were from poor families to begin with and were not earning anything while learning. You are right, it was to counter-act the low self-esteem, not to grow gaavah over the regular Yidden. And their dress was respectable by the standard of the time, not “over the top”. So, let’s not blame Alter from Slabodka who was very sensitive to middos and was paying attention that every student grows appropriately for the current excesses and uniformization.

Echo, why wear hat, unless you are a Rav? Why can’t you wear a cap or a turban like you zeide or sabah did? was he not frum enough?
Suit is ok, the whole world wears suits for important meetings.

Being into the way you dress, is meorer taaveh, (think about this for 5 min before you argue) and therfore its ossur,

Look at these posts, what does in style mean,… tight pants, open buttons…. that proves my point

In slabodke it was not about style, it was about dressing well, looking good is not the same as looking in style… and also you should know even in slabodke they only did it coz boys weren’t finding shiduchim, the girls did not want to marry yeshiva bochurim, (it was a new concept)
