I heard that Rav Schachter quoted in the name of R’ Shlomo Zalman Auerbach that the prevalent Minhag in America, the way it is written in the Artscroll Siddur, is not proper. We usually make a Borei P’ri Ha’etz on the apple in honey then move on to other Simanim.

However, if one of those other Simanim is a pomegranate then one should make a Brachah on that first because it is one of the Shivas Haminim and therefore earns priority for the Brachah over non-Shivas Haminim fruits.

and the same if you have dates. However my rav said that since apple n honey should go first, the rimon etc should just not be brought out until after eating the apple with a ha’eitz.

    2) On the night of Rosh Hashana when it is customary to an apple dipped in honey, and also many other fruits, some from the Shivas HaMinim, each with its own symbolic meaning, according to many Poskim it is best to make the Bracha on the Shivas HaMinim and not on the apple. (See Kaf HaChaim Siman 583:25. This was also the opinion of Rav Shlomo Zalmen Auerbach Zatzal. Others argue and maintain that the Bracha can be made on the apple in this case. See Piskei Teshuva Siman 583:2 that this was the Minhag of the Ari, Minhag Chabad and others)

One way to get around the issue is to conceal (in the fridge) the promeganate. It can be brought out after the apple.

We leave the dates and pomegranates in the kitchen until after the apple.

We make the Borei P’ri Haetz on the date.

We dip challah in honey so the apple in honey is anticlimactic, therefore we make the haeitz on whatever of the shivas haminim we have and eventually get to dipping an apple in honey.
