What would happen to Israel politically if Bibi woke up one day and decided to reestablish slavery strictly according to Jewish law.
September 24, 2017 8:05 pm at 8:05 pm #1368393JosephParticipantThe same thing that would happen if he were to enact into law any Halacha, say, required all of Israel to separate Terumah and Maaser.
What would happen in either with slavery or with Terumah and Maaser is that the frum Yidden would be very happy and celebrate whereas the westernized non-frum Israelis would be angry and protest.
And since there unfortunately are more non-frum than frum, Bibi being the political animal he is will do the politically expediant thing and not enact the halachicly correct law.
September 24, 2017 9:24 pm at 9:24 pm #1368403akupermaParticipant1. Bibi staged a putsch, and declared himself absolute monarch????????????
2. In practice, owning an Jewish slave was not a good deal economically, especially if the person came with a family (who needed to be supported but didn’t have to work).
3. Goyish slavery was only profitable if one could afford to work slaves to death and cheaply acquire new ones, plus various things involving female slaves that Jews are not allowed to do.
4. Perhaps the original question came from someone whose post-fast meal was largely alcoholic, and thinks it is purim.
September 25, 2017 4:31 am at 4:31 am #1368453Avi KParticipantJoseph, actually almost all produce in Israel has had terumot and maaserot separated as having a certificate widens the consumer base. For the same reason even HaShomer HaTzair kibbutzim have kosher guest houses.
Akuperma,
1. Time crowned him “King Bibi”.
3a. Apparently it was economically feasible as some people had them (e.g. Tabi, Rabban Gamliel’s slave). One could not “work them to death” as they kept Shabbat, yom Tov and Chol haMoed.
b. A mamzer is allowed to be with his shifcha kenanit – and Rabbi Tarfon even advises this (Kiddushin 69a).September 25, 2017 1:19 pm at 1:19 pm #1368775GadolhadorahParticipantLets just ignore “morality”….if there are those who somehow get some kind of sick and perverse psychic satisfaction from theorizing or postulating the enslavement of other human beings because there is some predicate in the torah or Talmud, we should definitely cater to their needs and indulge them. Why not start a thread on when/how its OK to administer summary capital punishment against another yid for violating one of several prohibitions
September 25, 2017 1:25 pm at 1:25 pm #1368784👑RebYidd23ParticipantGadolhadorah, would you really put that past them?
September 25, 2017 2:13 pm at 2:13 pm #1368809Avi KParticipantDor, what does one have to do with the other (although there is summary capital punishment – the ba b’machteret and the manslaughterer who leaves the city of refuge, for example)? The fact of the matter is that there is a form of slavery – prisoners are put to work (the Thirteenth Amendment even makes an explicit exception for ” punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted”). The fact of the matter is that many ex-cons commit crimes in order to go back inside. There they room and board plus work and society. Wouldn’t it be better to give these people the opportunity to sell themselves to a frum Jew and get all that plus Shabbat, Yom Tov, Chol HaMoed, a wife, etc.?
September 26, 2017 7:03 am at 7:03 am #1369864hujuParticipantSo, Joseph, when Halachic slavery is revived, do you want to be a master or a slave? And do you already have a pierced ear?
September 26, 2017 8:47 am at 8:47 am #1369869JosephParticipantA Jew is prohibited from desiring to be a slave. Jews are masters in this realm. Hence the Eved Knani.
September 26, 2017 9:22 am at 9:22 am #1369875Avi KParticipantWrong again, Joseph. Hashem is the master. We are His slaves. Therefore it is improper to desire to be a slave of a person. It would seem that this is also true of a gentile. He should either be a Ben Noach or a ger. However, Hashem gave an out for people who have a slave mentality or are gravely financially embarrassed.
September 26, 2017 10:23 am at 10:23 am #1369948JosephParticipantAvi, dearest. My comment pertained to desiring to be a slave to humans. Which, as I stated, is prohibited for a Jew to desire. A goy has no such proscription.
September 26, 2017 12:58 pm at 12:58 pm #1370115Avi KParticipantJoseph,
1, Dearest? How did that get past the Mods?
2. Please state your source for a mere desire to be prohibited. I will state my source for it being permitted and even desirable:
ספרא על ויקרא כ כו
ר’ אלעזר בן עזריה אומר מנין שלא יאמר אדם “אי אפשי ללבוש שעטנז. אי אפשי לאכול בשר חזיר. אי אפשי לבוא על הערוה” אבל “אפשי ומה אעשה ואבי שבשמים גזר עלי כך”? תלמוד לומר “ואבדיל אתכם מן העמים להיות לי”– נמצא פורש מן העבירה ומקבל עליו עול מלכות שמים.
3. Does a goy not have to be a servant of Hashem in his way (keeping the sheva mitzvot)?September 26, 2017 2:15 pm at 2:15 pm #1370210MDGParticipantI’m calling troll.
September 26, 2017 2:16 pm at 2:16 pm #1370265👑RebYidd23Participant“Dearest” is weird. It’s “dear” that is used to be condescending, dear.
September 26, 2017 2:19 pm at 2:19 pm #1370347YW Moderator-29 👨💻ModeratorDearest? How did that get past the Mods?
??
September 26, 2017 2:58 pm at 2:58 pm #1370391👑RebYidd23ParticipantIf Joseph called Lightbrite dearest, would you say “??”?
Nope. But I don’t see the connection.
September 26, 2017 9:13 pm at 9:13 pm #1371535JosephParticipantAvi, why do you think an Eved Ivri who wishes to remain an Eved gets his ear drilled?
And why do you think Halacha explicitly discourages a Yid from freeing an Eved Knani?
September 27, 2017 4:32 am at 4:32 am #1371611LightbriteParticipantAren’t we all dear to one another?
September 27, 2017 4:45 am at 4:45 am #1371608Avi KParticipantMod, I was trying to think of how to put it delicately. Of course, if my name were Tzvi he could call me “deerest”. I, in fact, knew someone named Tzvi who received a letter addressed “Dear Deer”.
Joseph,
1. I think he he has a problem. However, it is not even an aveira to do it.
2. Once he becomes an eved that is something else. However, he can even be freed to complete a minyan. So just find eight other men and decide to daven. Rav Moshe says (IM YD 1:162) that one may even buy him in order to free him and then do so.September 27, 2017 12:25 pm at 12:25 pm #1371876👑RebYidd23ParticipantIs a Tzvi a deer or an antelope?
September 27, 2017 1:02 pm at 1:02 pm #1371908Avi KParticipantRY, according to the Wikipedia it is an antelope but according to the Google translator it is a deer. In any case, it plays.
