I aim to get 8 hours of sleep each night, but usually end up with 6-7 or less at least a few nights each week. Would I be better off training myself to get only 6 hours each night, so I could get more done at night or in the morning? Is that even possible on a long-term basis? It seems like mothers need to do it for at least a few years, so it must be possible, right?May 15, 2012 9:11 pm at 9:11 pm #888196NechomahParticipant
I think the Rambam says that each hour of sleep before chatzos halailah counts as double, so if you want to get the equivalent of 8 hours, you could go to sleep at 10:30 and wake up at 4:30. Not a great idea to go to sleep late and try to get up early. That’s often burning the candle at both ends.
If you feel rested and can function on less sleep then by all means sleep less, but if not, then you need to get the amount of sleep that your body needs. How old are you? Teenagers need more sleep usually than adults because they are growing.May 15, 2012 9:16 pm at 9:16 pm #888197ZeesKiteParticipant
Sleep is a bad habit. Very bad. You can’t things done while seeping, can you?
It’s a bad habit brought on by selfish mothers, who want to keep their babies quiet. So they put them to sleep. That’s how people get the habit for sleep.May 15, 2012 10:50 pm at 10:50 pm #888198computer777Participant

Yes, mothers do it. But they catch up by falling asleep as soon as kidush is made by the Shabbos table or other inopportune times. And they have a hard time not falling asleep at their desk at work.May 15, 2012 11:22 pm at 11:22 pm #888199YW Moderator-42Moderator
What’s sleep? Is that like what people do on Shabbos afternoon?May 16, 2012 12:25 am at 12:25 am #888200Doodle-Man™Member

Nechomah: We generally don’t listen to the Rambam’s medical advice, but I don’t think he said that anyway. He did say to get 8 hours a night though.May 17, 2012 5:45 pm at 5:45 pm #888203HereWeGoMember
Okay, thanks for all the advice. Guess I’ll just scratch that plan and go for better time management.July 29, 2012 8:42 pm at 8:42 pm #888204menucha12Member

There are plenty of of teenagers who never go to bed earlier then 3 or 4… Also for those of us who have gone to seminary, we have a whole year of sleep to catch up on, but not enough time to make it up! It’s quite complicated! 😉 I know for myself though that I can get tunz of sleep but still be a zombie! I’m always tired!July 30, 2012 6:34 am at 6:34 am #888206menucha12Member
