Does anyone have contact info for a boy willing to do snow shoveling in boro park?
November 10, 2010 5:12 pm at 5:12 pm #708203Y.W. EditorKeymasterHow much snow do you guys have in Boro Park now?
November 10, 2010 5:15 pm at 5:15 pm #708204blinkyParticipantHey its snowing in BP? How come i dont know about it:)
November 10, 2010 5:27 pm at 5:27 pm #708205bptParticipantCmiller –
You’re kidding, right? The biggest property in BP (including the driveway, would not take more than 30 minutes to shovel. Why would anyone need to hire someone?
On the off chance you’re talking about a senior citizen, you can probably get the delivery boy from the supermarket to do it for $20. But really, pay someone to shovel snow? What are kids / grandkids/ son-in-laws for? Don’t tell me everyone lives OOT. There is always someone (a nephew, a cousins child, someone) that can do this.
I find it funny, that kids can play in the snow (or go snow tubing / skiing/ ice skating, if they’re older). but are all of a sudden invalids when it comes to handling a shovel.
November 10, 2010 5:44 pm at 5:44 pm #708206theprof1ParticipantBP I also find it interesting that grandkids can’t do it. But since all my big grandsons learn in yeshiva from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM, I really can’t blame them for not coming to shovel my sidewalk. So I gladly pay anybody who comes to my door after a snow the $20 they ask and my grandsons can go on learning.
November 10, 2010 6:21 pm at 6:21 pm #708207bptParticipantGranted. But that would mean you have kids that are in the 35-45 y/o range. I have no problem if someone pays someone else to shovel their snow (or mow their lawn, or wash the car). But the prevailing attitude in BP (and I live there, so I see it every time it snows) is, its not MY JOB AND I WON’T DO IT.
Know what? If you live in a house, take care of it. I can see the occasional exception, but cross the board?
Gimme a break. I see bochurim play a mean (and I mean MEAN) game of b-ball, so there is no reason they cannot be asked to do some physical work. OK, the sidewalk, maybe that can’t wait. But the driveway? The car? That’s not an emergency, and can (and should) be done by an able-bodied male (or female, but I don’t want to be accused of sabotaging a shidduch, so I’l staying away from that angle).
November 10, 2010 6:36 pm at 6:36 pm #708208SacrilegeMember“or female, but I don’t want to be accused of sabotaging a shidduch”
Thats what I’ve been doing wrong! Shoveling for my father, who woulda thunk it…
November 10, 2010 7:04 pm at 7:04 pm #708209blinkyParticipantDon’t worry Sacrilege I have snowball fights! (a treat after i shovel) I must be in the shadchanim’s black book by now 🙂
November 10, 2010 7:16 pm at 7:16 pm #708210bptParticipantWhy am I not surpised… But you’re the exception, and for you, there is an exceptional shidduch out there. One who can handle a tough mesechta during the zman, cut fresh powder in Apsen during channukah vacation. (and shovel out his car and his shver’s when necessary)
No steerah, this chosson of yours. Its two halves of a whole, and what makes him right for you 🙂
November 10, 2010 7:24 pm at 7:24 pm #708211blinkyParticipantBP Totty- and also who will not be embarrased to have snowball fights with his wife:)
November 10, 2010 7:28 pm at 7:28 pm #708212WIYMemberSacrilege
If it makes you feel better I have seen married women on my block shoveling snow. No single girls but then again it doesn’t mean they don’t shovel snow.
Its nice that you shovel for your father but unless you are really strong you should avoid it. The last time my mother shoveled snow (last year) she was in a lot of pain afterwards because it uses a lot of muscles that many of us rarely use.
November 10, 2010 7:42 pm at 7:42 pm #708213bptParticipantYou’re a bit harder to peg, Blinky, because you have’nt disclosed enough info. But if I ahd to guess, I’d still go with the mesechta master, but somehow, I can’t see you (or your husband / kids) on skis. Snow Tubing, ice skating, sledding. Like the vast majority of us, we just stand on the side and watch people like Sac do their thing, and shake our heads and wonder “why would any sane person try something like that”
And as far as muscel pain WIY, there I sympathize with you and your mother. I’m no stranger to the outdoors, but nothing compares to the bending and twisting like snow shoveling. But that’s us 40+ year olds talking. You youngsters should be doing this with the grace of a ballet dancer!

Really strong! 😉November 10, 2010 7:43 pm at 7:43 pm #708215blinkyParticipantWIY- you seem to be very cautious of exercise check out the posture thread:)
By the way you wanted a name change how about WIY like ICOT:)
November 10, 2010 7:43 pm at 7:43 pm #708216bptParticipantSnow Tubing, ice skating, sledding
Sorry. I meant to write: Snow Tubing, ice skating, sledding, these things I can see, but skiing? No. (the rest of the post is unchanged)

“cut fresh powder”
LOL! I’m pretty sure thats what you do before you snort cocaine. The term is actually, shredding powder 😀
“Like the vast majority of us, we just stand on the side and watch people like Sac do their thing”
Thanks for the vote of confidence, but the one time I did go skiing was NOT pretty. I started at the top of the mountain and instead of doing those fancy zig-zagging patterns in order to keep pace I went woosh straight to the bottom at about 50 miles an hour flying over all the humps, having dropped my ski poles somewhere on the mountain… Snow Mobiling anyone?
November 10, 2010 8:10 pm at 8:10 pm #708218WIYMemberBlinky
I’m cool with WIY
I guess I’m into safety because I know a bit about exercise and injuries. I used to lift weights in the gym and did some reading up on it and they talk a lot about how improper form leads to injuries and in the gym I always saw the new guys trying to lift heavy weights with improper form and I always tried to correct them. You can tear a muscle or dislocate something a lot easier than people think. I don’t remember how it happened but one time I was bentch pressing a heavy weight with dumbell weights and I don’t know I jerked my chest or did something can’t quite remember what and for a few months I had some pain in the chest and rib areas.
Exercise is not a joke and one can really hurt themselves badly even when they are in shape. One needs to be aware of that so that they know how to do it safely.
November 10, 2010 8:30 pm at 8:30 pm #708219shimmelMembersac, I never knew there was something weird with shoveling snow!! I’ve been doing it for my grandma and now my parents for many years now 😉 It was my pleasure to help out!!
I’m also the girl who fixes things around the house with tools 🙂 no kidding!! if there are no boys around …you have to be the boy 😉
November 10, 2010 8:44 pm at 8:44 pm #708220SacrilegeMemberShimmel
I am the same way!
I have an older brother but the handyman genes skipped right over him. While my father can take a car apart and put it back together, my brother cant bang in a nail. Luckily, I got some of the handywoman genes 🙂
November 10, 2010 9:08 pm at 9:08 pm #708222bptParticipantBut can you two cook? I mean, its all nice and wonderful to be able to come home to a shovled sidewalk, but once in the door, what does the kugel taste like!?
November 10, 2010 9:17 pm at 9:17 pm #708223shimmelMemberSac,Hey!!
Iyh, when i get married though, I dont plan on giving any indications of my handywoman talents!! I think i’ll leave those jobs to my guy!!
Oh, that’s just my mouth talking.. I cant see myself waiting around for things to get done! what’s the big deal? you need to hang a frame, just bang some nails in with your hammer and it’s done! I coudlnt wait around until someone else decides to do it.
November 10, 2010 9:26 pm at 9:26 pm #708224HomeownerMemberBP Totty, you said:

Are you sure you live in Borough Park? There are many old houses with 100 foot driveways and 40 or more feet of frontage.
And as for the 30 minutes, where were you during the blizzards of 2009? If you’re so quick, I could have used your help.
November 10, 2010 9:34 pm at 9:34 pm #708225blinkyParticipantI’m also the girl who fixes things around the house with tools 🙂
Shimmel I always thought you were a male! hahahahaha thats really funny:)
Wellinformed- i thought you wanted WIY under your name, i guess you are humble and dont want everyone knowing your real name…

It has long been established that I am the best cook in the family (not that I have much competition…. sorry Ma!)
My married brother usually schedules his shabbosim around when I am cooking 😉
November 10, 2010 9:48 pm at 9:48 pm #708227shimmelMemberblinky, did I ever give any male indications?
see why the gender under the name is important :P?
November 10, 2010 10:24 pm at 10:24 pm #708228squeakParticipantYes, you did. “shimmel” is an old Germanic word for “white horse” which colloquially is used as a nickname for a <ahem> matured gentleman
November 10, 2010 10:24 pm at 10:24 pm #708229bptParticipant“old houses with 100 foot driveways and 40 or more feet of frontage.”
Homeowner –
All they need to shovel is a 3-4 foot wide path. And if they listen to the forcast, they can park the car in the front of the driveway, so they don’t need to shovel all 100 ft.
And in 2009? I was shoveling MY place and car (and ditto for all the other whiteouts)
How else could I get upstate to hit the slopes?!
November 10, 2010 10:36 pm at 10:36 pm #708230blinkyParticipant“shimmel” is an old Germanic word for “white horse” which colloquially is used as a nickname for a <ahem> matured gentleman
Exactly squeak, thats just what i was going through my mind when i read his oops i mean HER name:)

Blinky- same here. I think he once mentioned Yeshiva.
November 11, 2010 1:00 am at 1:00 am #708232Sister BearMemberAcross the Hudson you get a fine if you don’t shovel your sidewalk. If someone hurts themselves because of it, you could probably get sued. (What was the whole thing with Lazy Bean…)
November 11, 2010 1:39 am at 1:39 am #708233oomisParticipantDid it snow when I blinked?
November 11, 2010 1:54 am at 1:54 am #708234HomeownerMemberBPT, “All they need to shovel is a 3-4 foot wide path.”
A myth that is very unwise to perpetuate. You clear the entire width of the sidewalk or your negligence may cause you liability. (By the way, what do you think happens if you only shovel a “path” and then it starts to melt? Ice!)
Make sure your homeowner’s insurance is paid up.
November 11, 2010 2:15 am at 2:15 am #708235d aMemberIt was my mother’s birthday. My father told me to secretly buy a ice cream cake after Yeshiva. I come home with the box in my hand and standing in front of the driveway is my mother with a shovel shoveling. I felt so bad. I quickly walked past her, said hello, ran inside and put the cake in the freezer and then ran back out and took the shovel away from her.
(I was reminded of this story because of women shoveling…)
November 11, 2010 4:13 am at 4:13 am #708236Smile E. FaceMemberremind me to look this up when im ready to start shidduchim-i shovel, have snowball fights, build the succah, fix things with adn without tools… as for cooking, isnt that wat husbands are for?! jk, i can also do that, sorta:)
but back to the original question, i think i have a chiddush why cmiller is looking for s/o to shovel even tho its not snowing-s/he saw all the threads on otd, and wanted to help out by giving some of them a job…
November 11, 2010 6:57 pm at 6:57 pm #708237bptParticipant“Make sure your homeowner’s insurance is paid up”
If they make as far as my property, that means they made it down the entire, mostly UNshoveled block, and unless they live on the block, they made it down several mostly unshovled blocks.
Homeowner, are we talking about the same BP? The one in Brooklyn, NY? The parts that I see and walk trhu, 3-4 feet would be a g-dsend
