I have family who do business in China regularly and I had the realization this morning that Chinese women could be trained as soferim and produce works which pass computer checks, at probably 10% of the typical cost. And if it does not pass quality control we don’t have to pay them.
So all I need is a respected Rabbi to certify and distribute them and together we could make mad bank. Any suggestions?
December 3, 2012 3:08 pm at 3:08 pm #910812shmoelMemberPasul.
December 3, 2012 3:10 pm at 3:10 pm #910813akupermaParticipantFor most purposes, soferim are MALE.
For those things women can do, they have to be Orthodox Jewish women with good educations in Torah subjects. At this point, there are few in China.

T. His talmidim wrote a response to his detractors. If you can find it, it is a great read.
December 3, 2012 4:51 pm at 4:51 pm #910815shmoelMemberRav Avi Weiss is also matir many things no one else is and too writes a “response” to his detractors.
December 3, 2012 6:37 pm at 6:37 pm #910816rebdonielMemberWe need more training opportunities to learn safrus, especially since the petira of R’ Landesman, zt”l.

I didnt realize you were a noahide, YES you can write a sefer torah cheaper in china, india or whatever and you can get them to write in the nicest caligraphy (probably nicer than most soferimg today)
However a sefer torah is supposed to be written with the upmost respect and awe and solmness to god. A chinese , African , Indian or whatever just wouldnt have it. A computer could not duplicate this either.
December 3, 2012 7:12 pm at 7:12 pm #910818just my hapenceParticipant<blockqoute>Rav Avi Weiss is also matir many things no one else is and too writes a “response” to his detractors.
So did the Rambam. Your point?
Or is this yet another in the chain of discrediting AGR (Any Given Rav) with a non-sequeteurial Avi Weiss comparison?
December 3, 2012 8:21 pm at 8:21 pm #910819yaakov doeParticipantCharles – If you’ll agree to use Chinese men who undergo proper geirus, I’ll consider joining you in this enterprise. If you want to use Chinese women you’ll have to get in touch with those strains of Judaism that are flexible when it comes to halacha. If they can have female “rabbis”, chazonetts, moheletts, why not Chinese sofferetts?
December 3, 2012 8:43 pm at 8:43 pm #910820rebdonielMemberWhy do people here defame Rabbi Weiss so much?
And, there is little, if any, issue with a female sofer/soferet.
December 3, 2012 9:09 pm at 9:09 pm #910821Charles ShortMemberOh so the way I see it then, when purchasing a sefer you are relinquishing a quantum of idolatry to effect the performance of the mitzvah of writing a sefer, not to acquire a physical object per se.
December 4, 2012 2:38 am at 2:38 am #910822nishtdayngesheftParticipantR Landeesman was far from the only person who taught safrus. There are still many many people who teach safrus. I would say that he taught a minute percentage of professional sofrim.
Silly comment for you to make.
December 4, 2012 5:16 am at 5:16 am #910823beitar99ParticipantThis is totally asur from the shulchan aruch to the mishna berura to the sefer daas sofrim and teh keses hasofer everyone says asur. there is a problem of lishma that a goy can’t do anything l’shem the mitzvah this is why it is laso a problem for them to tie tzitzis. and rav abadi’s idea to silk screen was a problem for the lishma part and the writing part that most poskim held it wasn’t writing it was printing
December 4, 2012 6:26 pm at 6:26 pm #910824twistedParticipantShmol, I am sorry you felt the need to denigrate a major league chochom and his talmidim. I posted for those who enjoy sheilos and tshuvos, the great halachic arguments of the 19th century, and plain, lively halachic discussions. If that is not you, I apologize.
December 4, 2012 11:21 pm at 11:21 pm #910825rebdonielMemberThere was an interesting discussion in Tradition on the inyan of silkscreen torahs. Rav Bleich is against it, as is Rav Wosner.
Rav Abadi is a courageous and enormously gifted gadol.
December 4, 2012 11:44 pm at 11:44 pm #910826ChortkovParticipantThe ???? says in ????? that a ??? ???? written by a ??? (apikores) needs to be burnt. A ??? ???? written by an ???? ?????? must also be burnt.
(I don’t know if all non-jews nowadays come under the category of ???”?, although in China there may be more room for doubt, but they definitely come under the category of ?????.)
December 5, 2012 2:11 pm at 2:11 pm #910827ItcheSrulikMemberWhat does Rav Abadi do about the chok tochos issue?
December 6, 2012 2:50 am at 2:50 am #910828rebdonielMemberChinese people nowadays are mostly atheists, not akum. Most goyim in general aren’t considered ovdei kochavim.
I haven’t read his teshuva, but it’s on his website.
